Barnette

Eugene Wilson Barnette, 87, of Fleming Island, FLa., passed away on Saturday, July 28, 2018. Born Aug. 3, 1930, in Nashville, Tenn., “Gene” was the son of the late Wilson Barnette and Annie Erleen Barnette.

Eugene retired from the Navy with 20 years of service. In the twilight of his naval career, he earned a business degree from Jacksonville University and went on to have a successful career as an independent State Farm Insurance agent in Atlantic Beach, Fla. He was active as a 32nd Degree Mason, Shriner, Navy League and Kiwanis member. As an accomplished long distance runner, Gene participated in dozens of marathons including the Boston, New York and San Francisco marathons. His adventurous spirit led him to become a certified open water diver, snow skier and private pilot. Another passion was restoring antique British and German sport cars and U.S. military jeeps. He enjoyed traveling with his wife in their motor coach across the U.S. and spending summers at their home in Dillard. While living in St. Marys, they attended the Kingsland United Methodist Church.

Eugene was preceded in death by his loving wife of 62 years, Jeanette “Sam” Arleen Barnette, and son, Eugene Wilson Barnette Jr.

Survivors include his sons, Michael A. Barnette (Evelyn), Jack T. Barnette (Sheila), David L. Barnette (Kim) and Rodney S. Barnette (Beth). He was a grandfather of six and great-grandfather of three.

Committal Service with military honors will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 24, at the Jacksonville National Cemetery with Pastor Bruce Vaughhan of Kingsland United Methodist Church officiating.

Ms. Willie Marie Loyd Livingston, 79, of 124 Kelsey Drive in Hartwell, entered into rest on Thursday, May 17, 2018, at her home surrounded by her family.

She was born Aug. 23, 1938, in Manor to the late Hoke Loyd and Bessie Corbitte Loyd. She was the retired owner/operator of several Pier 6 restaurants and was of the Christian faith.

She is survived by daughters, Debra (David) Williams of Hartwell and Jackie Bates of Canada; stepdaughter, Leigh Ann (Jamey) Cano; sister, Katherine (David) Brunner; grandchildren, David (Emily) Williams III and James (Beta) Williams Sr., eight additional grandchildren and two step-grandchildren; great-grandchildren, Gibson Williams, James Williams Jr. and Rhett Williams and an additional five great-grandchildren. Many nieces and nephews also survive.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Arno Keith Livingston; and her sister, Ellen West.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 25, at Allison Memorial Chapel in St. Marys. Private inurnment will be held at Oak Grove Cemetery in St. Marys.

Mr. Robert Thomas Cutillo, 66, of Folkston died in the early morning hours of Saturday, Aug. 18, 2018, at the Warner Center Community Hospice in Fernandina Beach, Fla.

A memorial service for Mr. Cutillo will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 23, at Coastal Camden Funeral Home in Kingsland.

Cecil Romell Lizzamore, 58, of Sandhill, Fla., passed away Tuesday, Aug. 14, 2018, surrounded by his family. 

He was born on Dec. 12, 1959, in Kingsland to Eugene and Shirley Lizzamore. Cecil was a resident of Sandhill, Fla. He attended Camden County schools and later enrolled into the Job Corps. He was a carpenter by trade and was well-known as the neighborhood barber. He had a passion for cooking and enjoyed outdoor activities with his grandchildren. Cecil’s pride and joy was spending time with his family and friends. 

Cecil was preceded in death by both parents, Eugene and Shirley Lizzamore; and one brother, Kenny Lizzamore. 

He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife, Judy Lizzamore; his son, Tramaine Lizzamore; daughters, Katrina Albertie and Lashonda Johnson (Domonic); grandmother, Rosa Lee Roberts;  grandchildren, Nathaniel Glover, Jacolbi Johnson, Amauree Walthour, Tramaine Walthour, Jaiden Pollard, Kensli Johnson and Alaiya Pollard; four sisters, Rosiland Hines, Rhonda Jackson (Matthew), Pamela Brown and Melissa Lizzamore; one brother, Dennis Lizzamore; a devoted nephew, Eric Hines Jr.; a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews other relatives and friends.  

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 25, at River of Praise Worship Center, 2188 St. Mark Drive, Yulee, Fla. A viewing will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 24, at Sunset Funeral Home. Interment will be in Elmore-Wiley Cemetery.

Robero Andre Williams passed away on Aug. 4, 2018, in Mobile, Ala.

Robero was born Sept. 9, 1950, to the late Louis Willams and Dorothy Miller Williams. Andre as he was affectionately called, attended the public schools of Camden County and graduated from Ralph J. Bunche High School.

Besides his father, those preceding him in death are his siblings, Harvey, Carol, Clydneida and Rodriguez.

He leaves to cherish his memories, his children, Robero Andre Williams Jr., Arlene Lee (Sam), Louis Williams (Laci), Leotis Williams and Carol Spead; mother, Dorothy Williams; sisters, Delphenise Willis (Billy) and Edna Woodson (Arthur Jr.); brothers, Angelo and Dominic Williams; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 25, at Sunset Funeral Home.

Carl Ray Adams, 70, of St. Marys passed away Aug. 17, 2018 in Macon.

He was born on Aug. 5, 1948, to Laura Noble and Francis Arthur Adams, served honorably in the U.S. Air Force from 1968 until 1972 and was stationed in Vietnam at Da Nang, AB from August 1969 to August 1970.

After his enlistment, he spent many years maintaining Cumberland Island with the U.S. National Park Service.

Carl is survived by his daughter, Laura and her husband Brent Constantine; his grandsons, Elias and Micah Constantine; and extended family, Vicki, Jeremy, and Gary Divan Jr.

Elizabeth Scott Sikes, 79, of Kingsland passed away Friday, Aug. 24, 2018, at Southeast Georgia Health System, Camden.

Mrs. Sikes was born Nov. 3, 1938, in Moultrie and was the daughter of the late William and Thelma Flowers Scott.

Mrs. Sikes had been a resident of Camden County since 1974. She was a professor of nursing, teaching throughout the University System of Georgia and was a national evangelist with the Church of God. She was a member of the Lighthouse Church of God.

Mrs. Sikes was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother.

Funeral services were held Monday, Aug. 27, at the Lighthouse Church of God with Bishop Daniel Hampton officiating. Burial followed at Lawnwood Cemetery in Kingsland.

Pallbearers were Pete Mercer, Chad Palmer, James Galloway, Vinny Passarella, Quintin Carter and Wayne Peeples.

Survivors include her husband, Daniel N. Sikes; daughter, Debbie Kincheloe (Larry), and son, Danny Sikes (Jennie), all of Kingsland; three grandchildren, Lashae Ward, Jason Kincheloe and Leta Carter; and seven great-grandchildren.

Jean Pickren Harrison, 90, of St. Marys passed away Friday, Aug. 24, 2018, at her residence with her family by her side.

Born Sept. 20, 1927, in Folkston, she was the daughter of the late Verne J. Pickren and Marion Mills Evans. She was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth Harrison, and siblings, Marion Pickren Bell and S.L. Pickren.

Mrs. Harrison had been a resident of Camden County since 1950. She was a member of St. Marys United Methodist Church since 1950 and was very active in the church choir. She and her husband Kenneth established the Camden County Tribune in April 1950 and she was a member of the Junior Woman’s Club and Daughters of the American Revolution.

The family expresses their gratitude to the wonderful caregivers Betty Nettles, Joyce Peeples, Loren Hamilton, Spencer and Robin Grayson.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 28, at the graveside in Oak Grove Cemetery with Rev. Roy White officiating.

Survivors include her sons, Mike Harrison (Lorraine) of Harrietts Bluff, Joe Harrison (Selena) of Aiken, S.C., and Jeff Harrison (Eita) of Harrietts Bluff; three grandchildren, Craig Harrison, Jamie Lynn Harrison and Marci Harrison Henry; three great-grandchildren, Reed Harrison, Louisa Harrison and Cote Harrison; and several nieces and nephews.

The family request contributions in memory of Mrs. Harrison be made to the Helping Hands Food Pantry of St. Marys United Methodist Church or the Humane Society of Camden County.

Vivian Wise Smith, 89, of St. Marys passed away Wednesday, August 22, 2018 at Hospice of the Golden Isles in Brunswick.

Born June 12, 1929, in Woodbine, she was the daughter of the late William and Maggie Miller Smith. She was also preceded in death by her son, Carnell Smith Jr., and daughter, Donna Faye Thomas.

Mrs. Smith was always known for cooking for so many people and taking care of her family. She was a loving mother, sister, grandmother and great-grandmother and attended Southeast Community Church.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 28, at Allison Memorial Chapel with Pastor Steve Curtis officiating. Burial followed at Oak Grove Cemetery.

Survivors include her daughter, Lunn Panzone of St. Marys; sister, Patricia Quails; seven grandchildren, Chad (Heather) Jones, Jennifer (Wade) Sweat, Christena Panzone, Maghan (John) Jacobs, Joshua Smith, Joylynn Smith and Breanna Smith; nine great-grandchildren, Gregory Cartwright, Heather (Jamie) Stanley, Nicholas Sweat, Audrey Jones, Savannah Jones, Haley Sweat, Nathan Dougherty, Cheyann Jacobs and Hope Jacobs; and several nieces and nephews.

Captain William J. (Bill) Weisensee, USN, (RET.) passed away on Saturday, Aug. 11, 2018, at the age of 85, after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease.

Bill is predeceased by his parents, Helen and William Weisensee; his brother, Frank Weisensee; his sister, Estelle; and his son, Gary Weisensee.

Bill is survived by his loving wife Nancy of 38 years. Also surviving are Bill’s brother Richard; five children, including William, Kevin, Tom, Cindy and Matt; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Bill had an immense love for his family. Bill’s hobbies included golf, camping, boating, traveling and attending submarine veteran reunions throughout the US. He was an avid fan of the Red Sox, Patriots and NASCAR. He was influential in the establishment of the St. Mary’s Submarine Museum and contributed much of his memorabilia to the museum.

Bill was born in Brighton, Mass. After graduating from Lexington High School, Bill enlisted in the United States Navy in January 1952 and advanced through the enlisted ranks to the grade of chief electronics technician in the Submarine Nuclear Power Program. In July 1962, he was commissioned as an ensign in the Limited Duty Officer (LDO) Program. 

In February 1985, Bill was one of the first LDOs promoted to the rank of captain. Capt. Weisensee graduated from Southern Illinois University and earned three master’s degrees throughout the course of his career.

Capt. Weisensee's sea duty included tours on USS Thuban (AKA 19), USS Amberjack (SS 522), USS Sabalo (SS 302), USS Tullibee (SSN 597), USS Cusk (SS 348), USS Nereus (AS 17), commanding officer of Shippingport (ARDM 4) and executive officer of USS Fulton (AS-11) from January 1984 to July 1986.

Other tours included commissioning SIC Nuclear Prototype at Windsor; electronics material officer, Submarine Squadron Ten; director of operations advanced training at Naval Submarine School, Groton; assistant repair officer for Extended Refit Program at Charleston Naval Shipyard; and security officer, Naval Submarine Base, New London. In September 1986, Captain Weisensee assumed duties as executive officer of Naval Submarine School and as the commanding officer in April 1989. After graduation from the Naval War College in 1990, Capt. Weisensee reported as commanding officer of Trident Refit Facility, Kings Bay. He completed this tour in April 1993 and retired with more than 41 years of active duty on June 30, 1993. 

Capt. Weisensee has been awarded the Legion of Merit, the Meritorious Service Medal with two Gold Stars, Navy Commendation Medal with Gold Star, Navy Achievement Medal with Gold Star, Meritorious Unit Commendation Ribbon with Bronze Star, Enlisted Good Conduct Medal with two Bronze Stars, Navy Expeditionary Medal, Navy E Ribbon, National Defense Service Medal with two Bronze Stars, Korean Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with Bronze Star, United Nations Service Medal and Sea Service Deployment Ribbon with Service Star. Capt. Weisensee qualified in submarines enlisted (silver dolphins) in May 1955 and officer (gold dolphins) in January 1967.

Shortly after retirement from the Navy, Bill became the executive director of the Camden County/Kings Bay Chamber of Commerce and Joint Development Authority. He retired from this position in November 2001 but remained active in the local community of Camden County, particularly with the St. Marys Submarine Museum and the Naval Submarine League.

The family wishes to thank all of those who cared for Bill during his last few months, especially the compassionate professionals at Mystic Healthcare & Rehabilitation and Hospice at Vitas Healthcare. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research, or the St. Marys Submarine Museum in St. Marys.

Bill’s wake was held from 4 to 6 p.m. Aug. 20 at the Byles Memorial Home in Groton. Funeral services, with military honors, were held at 11 a.m. Aug. 21 at St. Luke’s Church in Gales Ferry.

Cherry Hodges Casey, 75, of St. Marys passed away Wednesday, Aug. 29, 2018, at Baptist Medical Center in Jacksonville, Fla.

Born June 23, 1943 in Columbia, S.C., she was the daughter of the late John Kennedy Hodges and the late Isabelle Simmons Hodges. She was also preceded in death by her sister, Caroline P. Hodges.

Mrs. Casey had been a resident of Camden County since 2004 and was a member of Agape Christian Fellowship Church. She was an avid reader and loved playing cards with her many friends.  She was a devoted and loving wife, mother, sister and grandmother (Mimi).

A celebration of her life will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 8, at Agape Christian Fellowship Church, 10600 Colerain Road in St. Marys, with Pastor Jonny Rodgers officiating. Interment will be held at 9:30 a.m. Monday, Sept. 10, at Jacksonville National Cemetery in Jacksonville, Fla.

Survivors include her husband of 54 years, Louie C. Casey of St. Marys; children, Robert Casey (Robin) of Woodstock, Bryan Casey (Dineen) of Greenwood, S.C., David Casey (Jennifer) of Jacksonville, Fla., and Ann Closs (Howard) of Fernandina Beach, Fla.; sister, Elizabeth Hodges of High Springs, Fla.; brother, John Hodges (Carla), of Miami, Fla.; sister-in-law, Orene Casey Duke (Archie) of Social Circle; eight grandsons; five granddaughters; and several nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests any contributions be made in memory of Cherry Casey to Agape Christian Fellowship Church.

Bonnie Leigh Stouffer, 59, of Waverly passed away, Aug. 31, 2018 at Community Hospice McGraw Center in Jacksonville, Fla.

Bonnie was born Feb. 2, 1959, in Brunswick and was the daughter of the late Harley Dilworth Head Sr. and the late Madalyn Wilson Head. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Sam Arthur Stouffer; sister, Barbara Ann Head; and two brothers, Dilworth Head and Dillon Head.

A lifelong resident of Camden County, she was a member of Horsestamp Methodist Church and was a pianist there for many years. She was a graduate of Camden County High School and a caregiver for her entire family.

She was survived by nieces, nephews, and cousins.

A celebration of Bonnie’s life was held at 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 3, at Allison Memorial Chapel in St. Marys with Pastor Doug Goode officiating. A private inurnment will be held at later date.

James Lewis Smith, 88, passed away on Sept. 2, 2018 in Orange Park, Fla., after a short illness. He had resided for the past three years in Blackshear after being a longtime resident of St. Marys.

He was born on Aug. 24, 1930, in Waycross, the son of John Henry Smith and Amanda Young Smith. He retired from the U.S. Army, having served in Korea, Germany and Vietnam. He also retired from the U.S. National Park Service, working on Cumberland Island. He enjoyed fishing and was known for his benevolent spirit in helping others.

J.L. was predeceased by his wife, Jeanita; his daughter, Nancy Johns; and son, John J. Smith.

He is survived by his son, Jim Smith; grandsons, Robert Smith and Adam McGrath; great-granddaughter, Madison Smith; and his sister, Doris Lastinger.

A private memorial service will be held by the family at a later date with interment at the Raulerson Cemetery in Pierce County.

James Derrell Peacock went to be with the Lord on Aug. 27, 2018.

He was born to James Lester and Eula Mae Peacock on July 30, 1950, in Waycross.

He is survived by his daughter, Erika Elaine Kufner (Kerry) of Orange City, Fla.; granddaughter, Jamie Elaine Guppy; great-grandson, Jadin of Melrose, Fla.; and sister, Delsie Mae Aldridge (Gilbert) of St. Marys; one niece; two nephews; and a son, Joey Murphy of Waycross.

He loved boating, fishing and traveling. He served in the Army and had been a supervisor at the post office. 

A memorial service was held at 6 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 8, at Deltona Memorial Funeral Home, 1295 Saxon Blvd. in Orange City, Fla. A second memorial will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 15, at the First Baptist Church, 102 W. Weed St. in St. Marys. Interment will follow at Oak Grove Cemetery in St. Marys.
