Richard Jason Angel, 42, of St. Marys passed away Thursday, July 19, 2018, at St. Joseph Candler Hospital in Savannah.

Richard was born March 10, 1976, in Tamuning, Guam, and had been a resident of Camden County since 1982. He was a 1995 graduate of Camden County High School and served active duty in the United States Army from 1995 to 2001 and the Army National Guard from 2002 to 2011. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Services will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday, July 26, at Allison Memorial Chapel in St. Marys with Bishop Jack Gross officiating. Visitation will follow the service. Interment will be held at the Jacksonville National Cemetery with military honors.

Survivors include his parents, Armando and Juanita Rosaria Angel of St. Marys; brother, Gerald Angel; sister, Amanda Angel Faleschini (Pete); niece, Isadora Faleschini; and three nephews, Sawyer Faleschini, Wyatt Faleshchini and Asher Faleschini.

The family requests contributions in memory of Richard Angel be made to the diabetes foundation or American Lung Association.

Steven S. Fridolfson, 58, of Woodbine passed away Monday, July 23, 2018, at Southeast Georgia Health System, Camden.

Steven was born Aug. 14, 1959, in Algona, Iowa. He was a graduate of Rolfe High School in Rolfe, Iowa. Steven had resided in Camden County for 38 years and was employed at Tire Mart for 30 years. He enjoyed cooking and, most of all, loved his family.

He was a veteran of the United States Navy.

Survivors include his mother, Sharon Kay Reefer Fridolfson of Woodbine; daughter, Wanda Nichols of Woodbine; sister, Deanna Fridolfson of Mesa City, Iowa; four brothers, Rocky Fridolfson of Woodbine, Todd Fridolfson of Rolfe, Iowa, Wayne Fridolfson of Statesville, N.C., and Mark Fridolfson of Rolfe, Iowa; grandchild, Stevie Lang; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, Ralph Thomas Fridolfson.

Private services will be held by the family at a later date.

Mrs. Betty Joyce Ray, 76, of Kingsland passed away suddenly on Wednesday, July 18, 2018, at Southeast Georgia Health System in Brunswick.

Mrs. Ray was born in Woodbine on April 2, 1942. She was the late John L. Sr. and Joyce Miller Walker. Mrs. Ray was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was a wonderful friend to all. She loved to cook and most people knew her for her fried chicken, potato salad, divinity, chocolate delight, homemade biscuits, peach cobbler and sweet tea. When she wasn’t in the kitchen, you could find her in the garden working on her beautiful flowers. She also enjoyed sewing and all sorts of arts and crafts. Many people around knew how much she loved and enjoyed riding the buggy with her husband picking up cans. But, most of all, she loved taking care of all her family and friends. She will be missed greatly by all who knew and loved her.

She is survived by her beloved husband of 58 years, Vernon F. Ray; her daughters, Patricia Pedigo of Woodbine and Wanda (Ken) Marshall of Kingsland; her brother, Donald Walker of Brunswick; her grandchildren, Brenda (Arnel) Douglas of Kingsland, Eugene Strowbridge of Bemidji, Minn., Megan (Kris) Lair of Biloxi, Miss., and Olivia Lowery of Woodbine; her great-grandchildren, William Stettler, Kaitlyn Lair, Madison Lair, Apollo Douglas and Kaiden Lair; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.

Along with her parents, Mrs. Ray joins her brothers Isaac and JW Walker in Heaven.

A gathering of family and friends began at 3 p.m. Saturday, July 21. A memorial service followed at 4 p.m. at Coastal Camden Funeral Home in Kingsland. Pastor Edward Flader of First United Pentecostal Church of Kingsland presided over the service.

The family requests any flowers given in her honor be live plants.

Billy Zane Chandler, 75, formerly of Kingsland, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, July 24, 2018, in Gainesville, Fla.

Mr. Chandler was born in Jasper, Ala., on Jan. 4, 1943. He was a resident of Tucker for most of his life and served in the United States Army at Fort Benning, Fort Campbell in Kentucky, Japan and Korea.  He was in the Carpenters Union Local 225 in Atlanta for 30 years. He was a resident of Tucker and Kingsland and spent his last remaining years in Gainesville.

Bill is survived by his devoted friend and ex-wife, Judy Chandler; mother, Christine Hood; children, Dawn (Neil) Ford, Jessie (Gayla) Chandler, John (Donna) Chandler, Bonnie Hill and Sandra (Richard) Moore; 17 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren.

Bill was preceded in death by his father, Robert Porter Chandler; and brothers, Jerry Chandler and Ronnie Chandler.

Memorial services will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 4, at Allison Memorial Chapel with Pastor Edward Dixon officiating and with military honors.

Kaitlyn Rae Taylor, 26, formerly of St. Marys, passed away Saturday, July 28, 2018, in Fairfax, Va., due to an automobile accident.

Kaitlyn was born Aug. 15, 1991m in Clearwater, Fla. She had been a resident of Camden County for 14 years and was a member of the TopCats dance team at Camden County High School in her freshman and sophomore years. She was also crowned 2007 Miss Teen Sweetheart Golden Isles. Kaitlyn was a 2009 graduate of Woodford County High School in Versailles, Ky. She enjoyed playing video games, taking silly pictures, hiking, fishing and loved the outdoors. Her favorite foods were vanilla ice coffee and mac and cheese. Kaitlyn was a loyal friend and loved and adored her family.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 2, at the First Baptist Church of St. Marys with Pastor Roland Norris officiating. Burial will follow at Lawnwood Cemetery in Kingsland. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to services.

Pallbearers will be William Holdaway, Austin Miller, Shawn Coover, Joseph Snowden, Scott Dukes and Tripp Dean.

Survivors include her parents, Angela and John Taylor of St. Marys; brother, Austin Miller of St. Marys; half sister, Madeline Sjogren of Lexington, Ky.; uncles, Nick E. Proffitt (Sharon) and William R. Proffitt (Jean); grandparents, Cathy and Don Teel of Christiansburg, Va., and Randall J. Proffitt of St. Marys; and special friend, William Holdaway.

Freeman A. Finkel, 77, of Kingsland, passed away Saturday, July 28, 2018, at his residence.

Born July 8, 1941 in Plymouth, N.H., he was the son of the late Louis and Fay Silversmith Finkel.  He was also preceded in death by his wife, Hope Finkel.

Mr. Finkel had been a resident of Camden County for the past 20 years and was retired from the United States Navy with 20 years of service and served his country honorably during Vietnam. He was an avid golfer and a member of the VFW Post No. 3835.  He was a loving father, brother, and grandfather.

Services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, Aug. 3, at Allison Memorial  Chapel in St. Marys with full military honors.

Norman Chris Peeples, 64, of Woodbine passed away on Monday, July 16, 2018, at his residence.

Chris was born on Sept. 30, 1953 in Brunswick to Kenneth and Wynelle Peeples. Mr. Peeples spent many childhood summers on family farms in Camden County, working in tobacco fields and developing a love for animals, a trait he passed on to his children and grandchildren.

Chris was a graduate of Brunswick High School and, after a short stint in the U.S. Army, he served his community as a firefighter for several years. For 10 years, he was employed by Gilman Paper Company in St. Marys before going into business with his wife Pam, brother Hugh and sister-in-law Mari Anne. Together, they owned and operated Salvador's Delicatessen in Brunswick for many years. Chris and Pam then branched off on their own with P & C Deli. Both restaurants were well-known in the community for their quality foods and southern hospitality.

Before his health began to decline, Chris was an avid outdoorsman. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, boating and camping. His hobbies also included carpentry, gardening and customizing golf carts. He was a Georgia Bulldogs fanatic as well as an Atlanta Braves fan.

Mr. Peeples was preceded in death by his father, Kenneth H. Peeples; his mother, Wynelle (Peeples) Jewell; and his sister, Sherry Lynn Sturdivant (Chuck).

He is survived by his beloved wife of 40 years, Pam; children, Angie Self (Steve), Shane Peeples and Brian Peeples (Crystal); his brother, Hugh Peeples (Mari Anne); three grandchildren, Alyssa, Nathan and Taylor; a sister-in-law, Robin Hunt (R.D.); and his niece and several nephews.

The Peeples family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 14, for fellowship and refreshments at Edo Miller and Sons Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Humane Society of South Coastal Georgia.

David A. Hogan, 78, of St. Marys passed away Friday, Aug. 3, 2018, at the Senior Care Center in St. Marys.

Born Jan. 21, 1940, in Norfolk, Va., he was the son of the late James and Lesta Lloyd Hogan. He was also preceded in death by his two brothers, James Hogan Jr. and Robert L. Hogan.

Mr. Hogan was 20 years retired from the United States Coast Guard, serving his country honorably during Vietnam. Following his retirement, he was an independent commercial truck driver for 20 years, and commercial driver instructor for a community college in Charleston, S.C. He then relocated to Camden County and worked at  Kings Bay sub base as a service contractor in the transportation department.

Mr. Hogan was always a faithful visitor at the Woodbine Opry. He was a life member of the VFW Post 8385 in Kingsland and enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was of the Baptist faith.

A celebration of Mr. Hogan’s life was held at 5 p.m. Monday, Aug. 6, at Allison Memorial Chapel in St. Marys with United States Coast Guard honors. Visitation followed the service until 7 p.m.

Survivors include his loving wife of 42 years, Harriet Hogan of St. Marys; daughter, Teresa H. Miller (Glenn) of Chesapeake, Va.; son, Robert Hogan (Khythrene) of Kingsland; stepson, Ray Thrower (George Williams) of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; sister, Rose Hackworth and twin brother, Paul Hogan, both of Chesapeake, Va.; four grandchildren, Orion Hogan, Samantha May, Adam Bevins and Victoria Hogan; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Gregory “Tyler” Head, 29, of Jacksonville, Fla., passed away Saturday, Aug. 4, 2018, at his residence.

Born in Brunswick, his parents are Clay Chadwick and Sheila Head of Waverly and the late Angela Marie Coleman. He was also preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Frank Head; his maternal grandfather, Lawton Coleman; and his maternal grandmother, Wanda Daniels.

Tyler worked as a sales representative for AT&T in Jacksonville. He loved animals, hiking and taking pictures.

Survivors include his father and mother, Chad and Sheila Head of Waverly; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Zachary Head (Shayda Plumer) of Waycross, Cody Spradley (Brooke) of Ludowici and Joseph Spradley of Pierce County; two sisters, Bradyn Head and Maggie Head, both of Waverly; his paternal grandmother, Eula Faye Head of Waverly; maternal grandmother, Janet Coleman; and maternal grandfather, James Daniels; and his lifelong friend, Brett Waldon of Jacksonville, Fla. Also several other relatives and friends.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 9, at Brookman Community Church with Rev. J.C. Carter officiating.

Edward L. Rodgers, 84, of St. Marys passed away Friday, Aug. 3, 2018, at Southeast Georgia Health System, Camden.

Born July 18, 1934 in Cottondale, Fla., he was the son of the late John C. and Gertrude Stephens Rodgers. He was also preceded in death by his brothers, J.C. Rodgers and Roy Rodgers; and sisters, Kathleen Rodgers and Agnes Gainey.

Mr. Rodgers had been a resident of Camden County since 1942 and was retired from Gilman Paper Company with 30 years of service. He was a member of the F&AM Masonic Lodge No. 109 in St. Marys and Scottish Rite No. 1835. He enjoyed gardening, fishing, hunting and his main hobbies were working on cars, lawnmowers, bikes, boats and motors. He was of the Methodist faith.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 8, at Oak Grove Cemetery in St. Marys with Pastor J. Roy White officiating and with masonic rites. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 7, at Allison Memorial Chapel.

Survivors include his wife, Bobbie Ann Hart Rodgers of St. Marys; daughters, Teresa Lynn Rodgers Meeks (Jimmy) of St. Marys and Penny Suzanne Rodgers Parsons (Darwin) of Dawsonville; grandchildren, James Edward Register (Jillian), Jennifer Lynn Dickey (Brad), William David Jones and Dawn Elise Register; great-grandchildren, Amanda Register, Katlyn Register, Lauren Register, Colton Holland and Gabriel Holland; and several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Sara A. Rowe-Goff, 76, of St Marys passed away July 13, 2018 at home in St Marys.

Sara was born in Monmouth, N.J., on June 29, 1942. She was the daughter of the late Theodore G. Rowe and Elinor B. Rowe. Sara was a beloved daughter, wife and sister. Sara was a graduate of Woodbury High School in Woodbury, N.J., in 1960, a graduate of Episcopal Nursing in Philadelphia in 1963, and a graduate of the University of San Francisco. Sara was a nurse and a Vietnam veteran in the United States Air Force. She retired from the VA system.

She was a wonderful friend to all who new her and a devoted sister. Being a retired nurse of 50 years, she was a true care giver. She loved to read and travel and especially help others.

She is survived by her brothers, David H. Rowe of Greensboro, N.C., Theodore G Rowe (Dore) of Woodbury, N.J. and St Marys; a sister, Susan J. Jadick, of St Marys; and a sister-in-law, Carolyn Goff of St Marys.

Along with her parents, Sara joins her husband, Charles E. Goff.

A gathering of family and close friends will be at the Jacksonville National Cemetery in Jacksonville, Fla., at a later date.

Lars Dustin Paul Hershberger, beloved son of Wayne and A. Amanda Hershberger, was born on April 28, 1983, in Charleston, S.C. Lars entered eternal rest on Aug. 2, 2018, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Lars graduated from Camden County High School in 2001. He attended Georgia Tech where he received his structural engineering degree. Lars continued his education at South University School of Pharmacy and received his Ph.D. in 2014. Lars was employed with Pharmedium, located in Cleveland, Miss.

In addition to his parents, Lars is also survived by his loving sister, Rachel Hershberger; maternal grandmother, Frances Rasmussen and his paternal grandmother, Sue Hershberger. Lars is also survived by many aunts, uncles, cousins and dear friends.

A funeral Mass will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 17, at Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church, located at 106 E. Dillingham St. in St. Marys. A celebration of life will be held from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 18, at Millhouse, located at 1215 E. King Ave. in Kingsland.

The family invites all those who wish to attend the service and celebration of life, to please come and share their stories of love and laughter in honor of their beloved son, brother, nephew and friend.

DeRotha (Lois) Montgomery of Kingsland passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 11, 2018, at her home.

She was the daughter of the late David Rhone and Johnnie Lee Cohen Rhone.  

She leaves to celebrate her life, two children, Sheri Spruill of Washington, D.C., and Leonard Spruill Jr. of Maryland; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; six sisters; three brothers; and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 18, at Young Zion Baptist Church. The body will lie in state at the church two hours before the service. Interment will be in Oak Grove Cemetery, St. Marys.

Ms. Avie Viola Aldridge, 83, of the Billyville community of Woodbine passed away at her residence in the early morning hours of Monday, Aug. 13, 2018. 

Ms. Aldridge was born in Fort Mudge on June 10, 1935. She was the eldest child of Madison “Duck” Markson Martin and Ocie Melton Martin. She was married to Owen James Aldridge and they shared the trials and rewards of life together for almost 59 years. Ms. Aldridge retired from the Camden County school system, where she worked in the Woodbine Elementary lunchroom for 34 years.

She was the oldest child of 12 and considered the matriarch of the family. She was a rock to many, who loved without exception and cared for others without expectation. To know her was to love her. She was a master in the kitchen and loved cooking for her family and church meetings. Mrs. Aldridge loved the Lord and loved hearing the word whether at Ben James Primitive Baptist Church in Pierce County or at local churches, whether it be Church of God or Baptist. One of her favorite sayings was “God doesn’t make mistakes” and Psalm 23 was one of her favorite verses in the Bible. Her passing will be felt deeply by her family and friends. 

Ms. Aldridge is survived by her children, Francis Jeanette Harrison, James Edward (Vicki) Aldridge, and Richard Aldridge, all of Woodbine; her sisters, Vielee (Jimmy) Hester, of Blackshear and Helen Logan of Waycross; her brothers, Wayne (Sherrie) Martin, Jerry (Erica) Martin and Ray Martin, all of Blackshear; her grandchildren, Dorothy Ponsell, Stacy (Jamie) Howell, DJ (Ashley) Harrison, Shannon (Amy) Herrin, Heather (Doyle) Dixon, Ashley Aldridge and Troy (Kristen) Campbell; her great-grandchildren, Taylor (Kyle) Corwin, Travis Ponsell, Zeb Ponsell, Cody Herrin, Garrett Herrin, Dalton Dixon, Cale Webb, Jacob Dixon, Caroline Campbell, Tanner Campbell, Lily Campbell, Emma Corwin, Landen Howell and Jaden Harrison; and several nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents, Ms. Aldridge joins her husband, Owen Aldridge, and her brothers, Marshall Martin, Dennis Martin, Melvie Martin, Marvin Martin, Davis Martin and Hilton Martin in Heaven.

The family will receive friends at 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 16, at Coastal Camden Funeral Home in Kingsland. Funeral services will follow at 11 a.m. in the Woods-Wainwright Chapel of the funeral home with Pastors Bert Holden and Tommy Sikes presiding. Interment will follow at Colesburg Cemetery in Woodbine. Pallbears will be Clifton Roberson, Shannon Herrin, Cody Herrin, Burley Davis, DJ Harrison and Matt Carnes. Garrett Herrin will serve as an honorary pallbearer.

Albert M. Taylor, 69, of St. Marys died Monday, Aug. 13, 2018, at the veterans hospital in Gainesville, Fla.

Charles Edison Brazell, 87, of Kingsland passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Friday, Aug. 10, 2018.

Mr. Brazell was a lifelong resident of Camden County. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Bessie Gay Brazell; his wife, Brenda Capps Brazell; son, Charles Steven Brazell; six brothers and six sisters.

Mr. Brazell had been employed with Occidental Petroleum Corporation, retiring with 20 years of service. He was a veteran of the United States Army, serving from 1952-1954 and was attached to the United States Air Force through SCARWAF (Special Category Army reassigned with the Air Force). He enjoyed dancing, fishing, planting his gardens, but most of all loved his family. He was a member of the Kingsland First Baptist Church.

Survivors include his daughters, Myrtice Marrs (Fred) of St. Simons Island, Cynthia Brazell Strickland, Bess Renee Brazell Norton (Tim) and Deidra Brazell O'Quinn (Russell) all of Kingsland; grandchildren, Courtney Strickland, Ryan Norton, Chase Strickland, Hunter Strickland, Kendal Norton and Charles Royce O'Quinn; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 14, at Kingsland First Baptist Church with Pastor Vernon Dillingham and Pastor Brian Parker officiating. Burial followed at Brazell Cemetery.

The family received friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, Aug. 13, at Allison Memorial Chapel.

Pallbearers were Ryan Norton, Chase Strickland, Hunter Strickland, John Robert Davis, Joseph Stover and John Avis Brazell.

Thomas Carl Myers Sr., 85, of St. Marys passed away on Saturday, Aug. 11, 2018, at Folkston Park following a lengthy illness.

"Carl,” as he was affectionately known by his family and close friends, was born on Jan. 19, 1933, to the late Thomas Jefferson and Pearl Holzendorf-Myers in St. Marys, where he was educated. Carl spent 32 years as an employee of Gilman paper mill before retiring and was also a known shrimper and fisherman until his health began to fail. He was a member of Wheeler Street Church of God in St. Marys under the leadership of then pastor Elder Raymond Campbell where he attended until his health began to fail and he was unable to attend.

Carl was preceded in death by both parents, Thomas Jefferson and Pearl Myers; four sisters, Joyce Myers-Floyd, Dorothy James, Loretta Pollard and Susie Bell Myers; and two grandchildren, Delicia Chenell Myers and Carlton Myers.

He leaves to mourn his passing: his loving wife, Johnnie Ethel Moody-Myers; his daughters, Carletha Myers-Rainey of St. Marys, Cynthia (Harrell) Bailey of Rochester Hill, Mich., Sharon (Moses) Wynn of Spring Bluff, Errica (Johnny) Milton of Folkston, Starlette (John) Reeder of St. Marys and Carla Arisa Myers of Atlanta; his sons, Thomas Carl (Nancy Marie) Myers Jr. of Woodbine and Fredrick Darnell Myers of St. Marys; his brothers, King Earl Myers of Jacksonville, Fla., Roy (Stephanie) Myers and Donald (Rosaline) Myers, both of Washington, D.C.; as well as a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 18, at Wheeler Street Church of God, 900 Wheeler St. in St. Marys.

Victoria Renee Weiss, 69, passed away in her home in Kingsland on Aug. 5, 2018. She was born on Oct. 6, 1948, in Newark, N.J. to Ray A. and Elizabeth Jean Weiss.

Renee was a well-known and respected attorney who has run a successful solo law practice in southeast Georgia for over 30 years. She formerly held an office in Brunswick but has worked over the past five years solely in her office in St. Marys. Her areas of expertise included all matters related to family law, bankruptcy and personal injury matters. She had a reputation of being a problem solver and always focused on the legal issues that affected her clients personally. Renee graduated from Murray State University in 1972, earning a degree in economics and mathematics. She earned her juris doctor from Nova University Law School in 1980. Renee was also a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army.

Renee’s passions included her strong faith in and love of God, family, friends, golf and garage sales. Many afternoons and weekends you could find Renee out with her friends on the links of her favorite golf course, Laurel Island Links golf club, as well as at garage sales and flea markets.

Renee is survived by her two brothers, Matt Weiss (Suzanne) and Chris R. Weiss (Nancy), along with nieces Christina and Madeline Weiss, and nephews Jonathan, Luke, Paul, Mark and Johnny Weiss. Renee has two children, Lance Weiss and Deanette Weiss Myers. She also left behind her beloved dog, Toby. Renee had a gentle, loving nature, always helping and giving to others. She always showed kindness and gave assistance to anyone in need. Her sweet spirit will be greatly missed by all.

Preceding her in death were her parents, Ray A Weiss (died July 11, 2007) and her beloved mother, Elizabeth Jean Weiss (died March 28, 2017).

A celebration of Renee’s life will take place from 4 to 7 p.m. on what would have been Renee’s birthday, Oct. 6, 2018, at the Laurel Island Links golf club, 233 Marsh Harbour Parkway in Kingsland.
