Mr. Charles Lenwood Miller Jr., 77, of Woodbine died peacefully in the early morning hours of Thursday, Sept. 6, 2018, at home with his family by his side.

Calling hours for the Miller family will be from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 8, at Coastal Camden Funeral Home in Kingsland.

Coastal Camden Funeral Home in Kingsland is entrusted with Mr. Miller’s arrangements.

Mrs. Laura Smith Davis, 63, died Saturday, Sept. 8, 2018, at St. Vincent’s Healthcare Riverside in Jacksonville, Fla., following a brief illness.

She was born in Homerville but had resided most of her life between Homerville and Manor before recently living with her daughter in St. Marys. She was retired from Clinch Developmental Service Center with the State of Georgia and attended Christ Camden Church.

Mrs. Davis was a daughter of the late Malcolm Earl Smith and Eula Mae James Smith. She was married to the late Alan Jack “A.J.” Davis.

She is survived by two children, Lisha Bateson of St. Marys and Les Bateson (Samantha) of McRae; one granddaughter, Remi Bateson; and three grandchildren on the way, Davis Jackson Bateman plus twins; a sister, Linda Morrison of Kingsland; a brother, Malcolm Smith (Phyllis) of Homerville; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 12, at Manor United Methodist Church.  Burial will follow at Pine Forest Cemetery in Homerville. The family will be receiving friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Music Funeral Home.

Annie Mozelle “Ann” Higginbotham Timmerman, 85, of Woodbine died Monday morning, Sept. 10, 2018, at the Hospice of the Golden Isles after a short illness.

She was born in Jesup to the late Everett Flurnoy and Mary Lovdia Dowling Higginbotham. Mrs. Timmerman graduated from Waycross High School in 1950, attended Georgia Teachers College in 1950-1951 and graduated from Georgia Baptist Hospital as a registered nurse in June 1955.

On Sept. 10, 1955, she married Charles Robert “Bob” Timmerman. The couple lived in Atlanta for four years where she worked at Piedmont Hospital and later moved to Thomasville for 13 years where she was a member and past president of the Thomasville Junior Service League. She was a volunteer nurse at the crippled children’s clinic for many years. In Thomasville, she worked for Camelia Gardens Nursing Home.

In 1975, they moved to Marietta for seven years where Mrs. Timmerman worked for Hill Haven Nursing Home. In 1982, they moved home to Brantley County where she worked for the Georgia Department of Family and Children Services and Charlton Visiting Nurses. She became the first school nurse in Brantley County and helped set up the school nurse program in the county. Mrs. Timmerman retired in 1998.

Ann loved the Smoky Mountains and Fernandina Beach. She played tennis well into her 60s. In her later years, she enjoyed quilting. It gave her great joy to sing in her church choirs and she was known to break into song at the drop of a hat.

Mrs. Timmerman was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, John Wesley Sunday School Class, Chancel Choir and Keenager Choir. She served on multiple church committees throughout the years. In December 2017, Mr. and Mrs. Timmerman moved to Woodbine and became members of Woodbine United Methodist Church.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by one brother, Earl Higginbotham; and two sisters, Inez H. Courtney and Juanita H. Spears.

Survivors include her husband of 63 years, Charles Robert “Bob” Timmerman Sr. of Woodbine; four children, Kim Timmerman Baird (husband Rob) of Woodbine, Christina Timmerman Peeples (husband John David) of Collierville, Tenn., Charles Robert Timmerman Jr. (wife Barbara) of Landrum, S.C., and Mary Lee Timmerman Carter (husband Albert) of Brunswick; 12 grandchildren, Greta Carter, Andrea Price, Drew Stover, Jeffery Baird, Josh Peeples, Ashley Coffer, Hannah Peeples, Caleb Timmerman, Stephen Timmerman, Brandi Slover, Luke Bozich and Tawney Evelyn; five great-grandchildren, Jordan Price, Daniel Peeples, Emily Ann Peeples, Ryker Slover and Sawyer Price; two sisters, Marian H. Morgan of Nahunta and Pam H. McLeroy (husband Clayton) of Trenton, Fla.; and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.

A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 13, at Trinity United Methodist Church in Waycross. Burial will follow in New Hope Cemetery in Hickox.

The family will receive friends beginning at 9 a.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church in Waycross.

The family requests the John Wesley Sunday School Class of Trinity United Methodist Church to serve as honorary pallbearers and should meet at the church by 10 a.m. Thursday for the service.

Denise Lynn Rogers, 38, of St. Marys passed away Monday, Sept. 3, 2018, following a long battle with cancer.

Denise was born Feb. 10, 1980m in Sanford, Maine. She had resided in Camden County for the past 31 years, attended Camden County schools and was in the dentistry profession for 15 years. She spent most of her life making everyone smile and laugh and was a little mother hen to all, children and

adults. Denise was a loving wife, mother, daughter, sister and auntie who left us after fighting a long hard battle with cancer most all of her life. She was of the Methodist faith.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 15, at Allison Memorial Chapel in St. Marys.

Survivors include her husband, Jerry Rogers of St. Marys; mother, Sandi Bissell of Kingsland; stepchildren, Dashawn Hudson (Victoria), Ja'Heim Hudson, Shantique Rogers and Chastity Lockett; sisters, Jamie Murphy (Willie) and Jessica Currie (Jeff); nieces and nephew, Emma Murphy, Justyce Currie and Dashaun Currie.

She was preceded in death by her father, Edward Bissell, and grandparents, Winnifred and Gordon Bissell.

PAFFORD — Carey “Tom” Pafford, 67, of St. Marys passed away Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2018, at Hospice of the Golden Isles in Brunswick.

Tom was born Aug. 27, 1951, in Palatka, Fla., and had resided in Camden County since 2001. He coached pee wee football at the Camden Recreation Center and also coached the St. Marys

Hurricanes. He was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corp for 12 years and served his country honorably during the Vietnam era. Tom was so proud of the construction work he had done from Florida to Georgia most all of his life until his retirement.  He enjoyed fishing, football and reading.

A Celebration of Tom’s Life will be held at 3 p.m. Monday, Sept. 17, 2018, at Allison Memorial Chapel in St. Marys.

Survivors include his wife, Petra M. Pafford of St. Marys; children, Tom Pafford Jr. of Gilbert, Ariz., Travis Cavalieri (Heather) of St. Marys, Christina Ranck (Kevin) of Palm City, Fla., Kenneth Pafford of Jacksonville, Fla., and Adam Pafford of Peoria, Ill.; grandchildren, Emberlyn Ranck and Kenley Pafford; one sister and one brother.  He was preceded in death by his mother, Marie Grinner Shepherd.

HUMBERSON — Sean Michael Humberson, 31, passed away Friday, Sept. 7, 2018, in Middleburg, Fla.

Sean was born Nov. 30, 1986, in Norfolk, Va. He had resided in Camden and Nassau counties for 27 years and was of the Baptist faith. Sean was loving, kind, had an amazing sense of humor and enjoyed sharing family stories. He dearly loved his girls, and enjoyed paintball, the Oakland Raiders, supported his mom's Jaguars, and especially beach and pool time with his girls.

A Celebration of Sean's Life will be held at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 15, 2018, at Allison Memorial Chapel in St. Marys.

Survivors include his two children, Kayden Marlee Humberson and Kealli Michelle Humberson, and his girl's mother, Caitlin Humberson of St. Marys; mother, Donna Humberson of Fernandina Beach, Fla.; brother, William "Billy" Humberson (Alysia); niece, Izabel Humberson; Paternal Grandmother, Rosemary Humberson; Maternal Grandfather, George "Nick" Smichnick, maternal grandmother, Carol Smichnick; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, William R. Humberson and paternal grandfather, William Humberson.

Edward Don Walker, 69, of Kingsland passed away at his home on Friday, Sept. 14, 2018.

Born Sept. 24, 1948, in Sayre, Okla., he was the son of the late Wilson Wright Walker and the late Ruby Faye Veal Walker. He was also preceded in death by his brother, James Calvin Walker.

Mr. Walker had resided in Camden County for the past 31 years. After retiring from 20 years of service in the United States Navy, he was an insurance and investment agent, and business development director for United First Federal Credit Union. He loved traveling with family and wood working.

A celebration of Mr. Walker’s life will be held 2-6 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 22, 2018, at the family home. The family requests that friends and family wear shorts and flip flops in honor of his preferred attire.

Memorial contributions in memory of Mr. Walker should be made to a Humane Society or animal shelter of their choice.

Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Ann Walker of Kingsland; two sons, Kyle Walker of Jacksonville, Fla., and Jason Walker (wife Kristi) of Murfreesboro, Tenn.; five grandchildren, Shea Walker, Evan Walker, Zoey Thomson, Madison Walker, Melanie Lizon (husband Eric); and great grandson, Carter Allen Lizon.

WASHINGTON — Mother Elvie Hubbard Washington, 84, of St. Marys passed away Friday, Sept. 14, 2018, at Shands Hospital in Jacksonville, Fla. 

She was born on Sept. 22, 1933, in the Woodsville community. She attended the Camden County Training School. She was married to the late Alvin Washington Sr. together they had eight children.

Elvie worked as a nurse’s aide at the St. Marys Convalescent Center. She also worked at Gilman Hospital and Camden Medical Center in the dietary department until she retired. 

A wake will be held 6-8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 21, 2018. A celebration of her life is planned for 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 22 at Young Zion Missionary Baptist Church, 4500 Hwy. 40 E., St. Marys, with Pastor Quan D. Glover officiating. Interment will be at Oak Grove Cemetery.

Malcolm Floyd Scruggs, 91, of Harriett’s Bluff passed away on Sept. 13, 2018.

Malcolm was born in Blackshear on July 18, 1927, to Truman Edward Scruggs and Rosa Bowen Scruggs and graduated from Waycross High School.

Malcolm served his country in the United States Army for 20 years and retired at the rank of major in 1965. Malcolm was in the Airborne Infantry, 508th Parachute Infantry, 82nd Airborne, and 11th Airborne and served in Germany and in the Korean and Vietnam wars. During his service he received the National Defense Service Medal, Korean Service Medal, Combat Infantry Badge, United Nations Service Medal and Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal (Vietnam). 

After his military retirement, Malcolm worked for the United States Postal Service in Waycross for 21 years. 

Malcolm was preceded in death by his mother and father, sister Jackie Henderson and brother Marion Scruggs

Malcolm is survived by his loving wife of 70 years, Mary LeFane Scruggs; two daughters, Julie Locker of Alexandria, Va., and LeFane Shaw of Seattle, Wash.; two sons, Malcolm Scruggs Jr. of Cleveland, Ga., and Stephen Scruggs and wife Sylvia Thomas of Cleveland, Ga.; and a sister, Patricia Hendricks of Jacksonville, Fla. Malcolm is also survived by several nieces and nephews, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and other family and friends.

Visitation was held at Allison Memorial Chapel in St. Marys on Wednesday, Sept. 19, from 5-7 p.m.

Funeral services with full military honors were held at Jacksonville National Cemetery on Sept. 20, at 10:30 a.m. with Pastor Adam Henderson officiating.   

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given to the Army Emergency Relief Fund.

Patricia “Christine” Chaney Davis, 77, of Baxley passed away early Wednesday morning,  Sept. 19, 2018, at Memorial University Medical Center in  Savannah.

Born in Jacksonville, Fla., her parents were John Chaney and Lucille Westberry Chaney. She is also preceded in death by her husband, William Nettles, and a brother, Donald Chaney.

Christine was a homemaker and a member of White Oak Pentecostal Church. She loved spending time with her grandchildren, crocheting, reading and watching TV.

Survivors include her five children and their spouses, George Floyd of Baxley, John and Tammy Floyd of White Oak, Sherry and Daniel Strickland of White Oak, David and Katie Davis of Baxley and Billy and Erica Davis of Baxley; 12 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a sister, Kathryn and Edward Higginbotham of Callahan, Fla.; and also several nieces, nephews, other relatives and a host of friends.

Visitation was held for 30 minutes before the service started at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 22, at Burnt Fort Church Cemetery.

A graveside service was held at 11 a.m. Saturday Sept. at Burnt Fort Cemetery with Rev. Raymond Drury and Rev. Dickie Waters officiating.

Margaret Deane Doyle, 71, of Kingsland passed away Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2018, at Southeast Georgia Health System, Camden.

Mrs. Doyle was born June 7, 1947, in Lubbock, Texas, and had resided in Camden County for the past 21 years. She was a member of the Kiwanis Club and the DAR. She loved scrapbooking, crocheting and knitting. 

Survivors include her husband, Bob Doyle of Kingsland; mother, Mary Margaret Sifford of Lubbock, Texas; three children, Lisa Davis of St. Marys, James Range of Texas and Melissa Lewis (Tom) of Virginia; brother, David Sifford of Lubbock, Texas; sister, Nancy Alana (Don) of Granbury, Texas; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her father, Roy D. Sifford.

Memorial services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 22, at Allison Memorial Chapel in St. Marys with Martin Turner officiating.

The family requests contributions in memory of Mrs. Doyle be made to the ASPCA fund.

Barry E. Barlow, 57, of St. Marys passed away Tuesday, Sept. 18, 2018, at Community Hospice, St. Vincent’s in Jacksonville, Fla.

Barry was born May 21, 1961, in Homerville. He attended Long County High School and was an avid pursuer of higher education while working towards his master’s degree. He was very good at debating, a fan of electronics, big on research and loved reading and politics.

Barry was a veteran of the United States Navy and was of the Baptist faith.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 21, at Allison Memorial Chapel in St. Marys with Rev. Curtis Cantrell officiating. Burial followed at Oak Grove Cemetery. Pallbearers were Tyler Barlow, Tanner Barlow, Trent Barlow, Colby Barlow, Bob Coble and Arnold Walker.

The family received friends at the funeral home one our prior to services.

Survivors include his daughter, Ashley Barlow Bell of Ludowici; mother, Beverly Barlow of St. Marys; sister, Joy B. Smith of Ludowici; brothers, Dennis B. Barlow (Shannon) of Valdosta and Chris Barlow (Sarah) of Woodbine; two grandchildren, Carrollynn and Cayden; and several nieces and nephews. 

Barry was preceded in death by his father, Curtis Eugene Barlow; and grandparents, Luna and Felder Adams and Ira and Minnie Lee Barlow.

The family requests contributions in memory of Barry Barlow be made to the Abundant Harvest Baptist Church building fund.

Wanda D. Easterling, 77, of White Oak passed away peacefully on Thursday, Sept. 20, 2018, at her residence.

Born July 30, 1941, in Gainesville, Ga., she was the daughter of the late Walter and Madeline Strode McMillan. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Charlie Easterling.

Wanda had been a resident of Camden County since 1981 and was retired from the Camden County Sheriff’s Office.

Survivors include her four children, Fred English (Bridgett) of Waverly, Cindy Elliott (David) of Warner Robins, Wade English (Carol) of Kingsland and Reneé Easterling of Brunswick; seven grandchildren, Lindsay Blecker, Heather English, Candice Thigpen, David Roberts English, April Meadows, Crystal Rahn and Brian English; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Private services will be held by the family at a later date.

Victoria Renee Weiss, 69, passed away in her home in Kingsland on Aug. 5, 2018. She was born on Oct. 6, 1948, in Newark, N.J. to Ray A. and Elizabeth Jean Weiss.

Renee was a well-known and respected attorney who has run a successful solo law practice in southeast Georgia for over 30 years. She formerly held an office in Brunswick but has worked over the past five years solely in her office in St. Marys. Her areas of expertise included all matters related to family law, bankruptcy and personal injury matters. She had a reputation of being a problem solver and always focused on the legal issues that affected her clients personally. Renee graduated from Murray State University in 1972, earning a degree in economics and mathematics. She earned her juris doctor from Nova University Law School in 1980. Renee was also a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army.

Renee’s passions included her strong faith in and love of God, family, friends, golf and garage sales. Many afternoons and weekends you could find Renee out with her friends on the links of her favorite golf course, Laurel Island Links golf club, as well as at garage sales and flea markets.

Renee is survived by her two brothers, Matt Weiss (Suzanne) and Chris R. Weiss (Nancy), along with nieces Christina and Madeline Weiss, and nephews Jonathan, Luke, Paul, Mark and Johnny Weiss. Renee has two children, Lance Weiss and Deanette Weiss Myers. She also left behind her beloved dog, Toby. Renee had a gentle, loving nature, always helping and giving to others. She always showed kindness and gave assistance to anyone in need. Her sweet spirit will be greatly missed by all.

Preceding her in death were her parents, Ray A Weiss (died July 11, 2007) and her beloved mother, Elizabeth Jean Weiss (died March 28, 2017).

A celebration of Renee’s life will take place from 4 to 7 p.m. on what would have been Renee’s birthday, Oct. 6, 2018, at the Laurel Island Links golf club, 233 Marsh Harbour Parkway in Kingsland.

Charles Douglas Stephens Sr., aka Blue, 77, of St. Marys. passed away on Sunday, Sept. 30, 2018, at his home surrounded by his loved ones following a lengthy illness.

He was born on Feb. 13, 1941, to the late William Franklin Stephens and Alice Rhino in Brooklyn, N.Y. Blue, as he was known by close family and friends, was a retiree of the department of sanitation in Philadelphia, where he was employed for 29 years and he was also a veteran of the United States Navy. 

Charles was a member of Greater Trinity United Methodist Church under the leadership of Rev. Eddie J. Conaway Jr. in St. Marys and a former resident of North Philadelphia and Bell Camp, Md., before relocating to St. Marys where he has lived for the past 18 years.

He was the former husband of the late Betty Carolyn Lindsey-Stephens who passed away Nov. 15, 2016.

Charles was preceded in death by both parents, William Franklin and Alice Rhino-Stephens; his loving wife of 37 years, Betty L. Stephens; his brothers, Clinton, Arthur “Simba M’Lee” and William F. Stephens Jr.; and two sisters, Estelle Pennington and Ethylee Stephens.

He leaves to cherish his memories two daughters, Sheri Grant of Winter Park, Fla., and Chenita Rogers of Olney, Pa.; three sons, Karl Stephens of Daytona Beach, Fla., Charles D. Stephens Jr. of Newport News, Va., and Troy S. Kane (Michelle) of Philadelphia; his mother in-law, Naomi Ferguson-Anderson of Bear, Del.; one sister in-law, Cheryl Donnie of Winston-Salem, N.C.; two brothers-in-law, Michael Lindsey (Carolyn) of Winston-Salem, N.C., and Cleophus Lindsey (Deniece) of Ceasar, Pa.; seven grandchildren, Margerie, Janay, Seneca, Kaimeco, Kari, Kahill and Kimberly; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.  

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 6, at his home church, Greater Trinity United Methodist Church, 900 Osborne St. in St. Marys.

Gail Welling Planas, 68, of St. Marys passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on Thursday, Sept. 27, 2018, after a lengthy and courageous battle with cancer.

She is survived by her husband, John Planas; son and daughter-in-law, Stephen and Katherine Planas; brother, John Welling; and cousins, Linda Farney and Sandra Farney.

Gail will be laid to rest in Lowville, N.Y., alongside her parents, Albert C. and Gladys Farney Welling, and her maternal grandparents.

Born in Lowville on Feb, 6, 1950, Gail was raised in Buffalo, N.Y., and Cheshire, Conn. She attended Marietta College in Ohio, receiving her Bachelor of Arts in 1972. Gail worked as a TV news anchor in Parkersburg, W.Va.; in retail advertising in Cincinnati and Toledo, Ohio; and in radio advertising in Findlay, Ohio and Rockland, Main. For several years, she also managed the gift shops of the Owls Head Transportation Museum in Owls Head, Maine, and the Cumberland Island National Seashore in St. Marys until her retirement.

Gail enjoyed tending her garden, taking walks through the neighborhood looking for planting ideas, and cooking traditional family recipes. Reading mystery novels and solving crossword puzzles were her favorite leisure activities.

Gail had a lifelong fascination with and love of sea turtles. In lieu of flowers, she and her family wish for contributions in her memory to be made to the Georgia Sea Turtle Center on Jekyll Island. Sherrel Suzette Spead, 54, of Kingsland passed away unexpectedly on Friday morning, Sept. 28, 2018, at her home.

Sherrel was born Jan. 12, 1964, to the late Aldophus Roberts and Rosa Lee Jackson Roberts. She attended the public schools of Camden County and graduated from Camden County High School in the class of 1982.

Besides her father, those preceding her in death are her siblings, Shirley Roberts, Martha Ann Nealy, Richard Jackson and Jonathan Roberts.

She leaves to cherish her memories, her children, Jerran Spead, Carol Spead, Christi Lewis and Keshia Adams; her lifelong companion, Jerome Baker; her mother, Rosa Lee Roberts of Kingsland; grandchildren, Jerran Spead Jr., Astraeus Pearson, Kai Spead, Alianna Lewis, Chris Lewis, Sydney Lewis, Charles Lewis and Shauntia Adams; great-grandchild, Jalana Adams; six sisters, Laverne Roberts of St. Marys, Nazerine VanPelt of Kingsland, Janice (Herman) Albertie of Sandhill, Fla., Velda Spead of Pensacola, Fla., Beverly Roberts of Kingsland and Miriam (Kevin) Broomfield of Kingsland; five brothers, Herman (Annette) Roberts of Sandhill, Fla., Nathan Roberts of Yulee, Fla., David Roberts of Harleyville, S.C., Darrell Roberts of Kingsland and Don (Gia) Roberts of Tampa, Fla.; sisters-in-law, Bernice Jackson of Eulonia and Faye Roberts of Kingsland; brother-in-law, James Nealy of Deland, Fla.; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.  

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 6, at Georgia Avenue Church of God. A wake will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 5, at the funeral home. The body will lie in state one hour prior to the service. Interment will be in Kinlaw Cemetery.

Sunset Funeral Home is in charge of final arrangements.
