Mary Veronica “Vera” Shewmaker, 92, of Kingsland passed away Sunday, March 25, 2018, at her residence.

Born Aug. 10, 1925m in Londonderry, North Ireland, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Maryann Madden. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Hartford Leon Shewmaker.

Ms. Vera came to America following World War II. She had been a resident of Camden County since 1987 and was a devout Catholic. She was known for her quick wit, having an answer for everything. She was a people person, never meeting a stranger and loved Georgia. Ms. Vera was a devoted mother and grandmother and loved her little Westie, Paddy.

Survivors include her sons, James Shewmaker (Sharon) of Jacksonville, Fla., and Barry Shewmaker (Denise) of Oak View, Calif.; daughter, Kathleen Wood (Shawn) of Chapin, S.C.; six grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services, the reciting of the rosary and visitation will be held from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Friday, March 30, at Allison Memorial Chapel in St. Marys with Father Stephen Gergel presiding. A graveside service will follow at 1 p.m. at Lawnwood Cemetery in Kingsland.

Mr. Harold T. Hodge, 77, of Clarks Bluff Road in Kingsland passed away in the late morning hours of Monday, March 26, 2018, at Southeast Georgia Health System in Brunswick.

Mr. Hodge was born on Oct. 24, 1940, in Eastman to the late Jack and Maude Hodge.

His family said of him, “Harold was a hard worker. Anything he decided he wanted to do, he would learn how to do it and he would do it well. He had a great sense of humor and a natural wit. He could find common ground to talk to anyone. He was large in stature, sometimes coming across gruff, but he had a big heart. He silently helped a lot of people as he went through life, always giving, helping his fellowman. He liked nothing better than to take family members across country, Canada, Europe and Alaska to name a few, showing them the sights.”

Along with his family and friends, he will especially be missed by Shirley Young, Ida Thrift and Debbie Peeples. 

Mr. Hodge is survived by Ida Thrift of Kingsland; his daughters, Kelly Hodge and Cindy Hodge, both of Lancaster, Calif., Bonnie Hodge of Albuquerque, N.M., and Christine Hodge-Delgato of Kernville, Calif.; his sons, John (Sandy) Hodge of Dothan, Ala., and Joe (Linda) Hodge of Lancaster, Calif.; his sisters, Bernadette Moon of Blairsville and Betty (Paul) Probes of Snellville; and his grandchildren, Robert Hanna, Amanda Chickman, Ashley Chickman, Dalton Jensen, Jackie Hodge, Theresa Anaya, Olivia Delgado, Victor Fragoza, Desiree Fragoza, Dana Fragoza, Anna James, Abby Sparkman and John David Hodge; and his great-grandchildren. 

Besides his parents, Mr. Hodge was also predeceased by his brothers, Cecil Hodge and Harold M. Hodge, and his brother-in-law, Kenneth Moon.

Funeral services for Mr. Hodge will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 31, at Ruhamah Baptist Church with Pastor Alan Brown presiding. Interment will follow at Oakwell Cemetery in Kingsland. Pallbearers will be Bryan Sapp, Brian Strickland, Jamie Hodge, Pete Mercer, Coleman Groover and Daniel Sparkman.

Roberta Campbell, 99, passed away peacefully Friday, March 30, 2018, at the Southeast Georgia Health System Senior Care Center in St. Mary after spending a joyous week with all of her family.

Roberta Campbell was born in Camden County on Sept. 5, 1918, the seventh child of the late Mr. Ammie Lee Johnson Sr. and Mrs. Carrie Bell Way Johnson. Having lived in Kingsland her entire life, she was educated in Camden County schools and worked in the community as a cosmetologist. She married Mr. Lonnie Campbell on March 18, 1950, who preceded her in death. 

Roberta Campbell confessed Christ at an early age. She joined St. Paul African Methodist Episcopal Church at the age of 8 under the pastorate of the Rev E.H. Warley. Knowing Jesus as her Savior and willing to work for the up building of His kingdom, she diligently served in several ministries at St. Paul.  Her service included church clerk from 1960-1977; class leader for a number of years; Sunday school superintendent; president, stewardess board No. 1; member of the trustee board; missionary president for more than 50 years; choir president; and one of the first ushers of the church.

Licensed as a minister under the auspices of the Old Georgia Annual Conference of the 6th Episcopal District, Sister Campbell could be found preaching and teaching the Word of God throughout Southeast Georgia and Northeast Florida. She was a prayer warrior and on any given day, she could be found fervently praying, praising and worshiping the Lord who she loved with all of her heart, mind and soul.

Mrs. Campbell leaves to forever celebrate her life, a son and daughter-in-law, Tommie and Gladys Mitchell of Savannah; five grandchildren, Sabrina Glover (Marshall) of Woodbine, Delphyne Joseph of Kingsland, Yolanda Williams (Varick) of Artesia, Calif., Kim Mole (Richard) and Taryll Mitchell (Michele) of Pooler; seven great-grandchildren, Sharmaine Dallas (Derrick) of St. Marys, Taj Glover (Marie) of Richmond Hill, Corey Williams of Atlanta, Kayla and Nicholas Williams of Artesia, Calif., Victoria and Tiffani Mitchell of Savannah; three great-great-grandchildren, Ambrionna Dallas of Tallahassee, Fla., and Taylor Glover and Tony Rhodes of Richmond Hill; special goddaughter, Sharon Griffin of St. Marys; goddaughter, Lucy Patterson of St. Marys and godson, Lonnie Samuels of Las Vegas; caretaker and special friend, Pearlie Mae Cobbs of Kingsland.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Mr. Lonnie Campbell; son, Mr. Silas Johnson; and siblings, Mrs. Marjorie Williams, Ms. Sally Johnson, Mr. Chancey Johnson, Mr. Ammie Lee Johnson Jr., Mrs. Etta Mae Holmes and Mrs. Lola Bell Bryant. 

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, April 6, at St. Paul AME Church. Interment will be in Kingsland Cemetery.

Bobby E. Pittman, 85, of Hawthorne passed from this life on Friday, March 30, 2018, at Putnam Community Medical Center following an extended illness.

He was a native of Sanderson, Fla., and had lived in Putnam County for the past 20 years coming from St. Marys. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and attended Woodlawn Baptist Church. He was a member of Fleet Reserve and a life member of VFW. Bobby loved fishing, hunting and playing poker, but most of all his family.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Mary Beth Pittman; children, Susan James (David), Ricky Pittman (Ann) and Beverly Bennett (Richard); eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 3, at Johnson-Overturf Interlachen Chapel with Pastor Martin Turner officiating. Burial followed in Pineview Cemetery. The family received friends from 1 p.m. until the time of services.

Rev. Clarence Odell Sapp, 92, of Woodbine, formerly of Brunswick, passed away on Monday, April 9, 2018, at Hospice of the Golden Isles.

Rev. Clarence was born Nov. 13, 1925, in Manassas, the son of the late Daniel and Margaret Sapp. He was a United States Army veteran, having served in World War II and was awarded the Purple Heart. He pastored several Baptist churches in the area. He was devoted to his faith and family. He loved his children and grandchildren dearly.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Blanche Sapp.

He is survived by his wife, Lucille Sapp; his children, Sharon Sweet (Dave), Gail Asbell (Garey, deceased), Davey Sapp (Shirley), Sylvia Brockington Edenfield (Billy), Dr. Terry Howard (Ellis), Roger Sapp (Robbie) and Lori Turner (Gary); stepdaughter, Annette Thomas; 25 grandchildren; 45 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 12, from the Chapel of Edo Miller and Sons with Pastor Christopher Ogden, Dr. John Harris and Pastor Bobby Woods officiating. Interment with military honors will follow at Palmetto Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

James Anthony Coleman, 61, of Woodbine answered the call of our Heavenly Father and his spirit took flight to be present with the Lord early Thursday morning, April 5, 2018.

Deacon James Anthony Coleman was born Dec. 27, 1956, to James Grover Coleman, who preceded him in death, and Doffie Lee Coleman. He was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., and graduated from Erasmus Hall High School in Brooklyn.

He pursued a career in long-haul truck driving until his health failed. He was a deacon at Woodbine Tabernacle of Prayer Church where he served for many years under the leadership of his mother, Pastor Doffie Silvia.

He leaves to cherish his memories, his loving mother, Pastor Doffie Silvia of Woodbine; his wife, Glenda Wishop-Coleman of Jacksonville, Fla.; one son, Ja’Kai Gevon Coleman of Jacksonville; two stepdaughters, Chelsa Shjonique Alston and Tyshana Lashell Johnson, both of Jacksonville; two sisters, Daurel Richardson of St. Marys and Denise Washington of Bronx, N.Y.; two brothers, Eddie Glover Washington of Bronx and Lamont Jackson of Atlanta; sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 14, at Woodbine United Methodist Church. A wake will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Interment will be in Woodbine Cemetery.

GraceLynne Marie Kimbell, 17, of St. Marys passed away on Thursday, April 5, 2018.

GraceLynne was born Feb. 8, 2001, in Los Alamitos, Calif. A child of the Marine Corps, she lived in many places including Davenport, Iowa, and Jacksonville, N.C., making many friends along the way. She had resided in Camden County since 2013 and was a junior at Camden County High School.

She had a gift for art, literature and music, especially the violin, piano and singing. She enjoyed outdoor sports and nature, always taking the time to simply sit and let it surround her. GraceLynne had a gentle heart, compassion for everyone she knew and a tender, loving way with animals. She was a member of the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church of Kingsland.

A visitation for friends will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday, April 12, at Allison Memorial Chapel in St. Marys with graveside services to follow in Bellbrook, Ohio.

Survivors include her parents, Rose Marie and Laurens Kimbell of St. Marys; brother, Challen Kimbell of St. Marys; grandparents, Mary Kay and Lawrence Watson, Paul and Mary Ann Prichard, and Richard and Candace Kimbell; great-grandmother, Mildred Marie Prichard; her aunts, Heather, Jenna, Abby and Jaymee; uncles, Rick, Joey, Jacob, Jarred, Andrew and Jordan; cousins, Chance, Jacob, Kirstin, Lilly, Taylyn and Lincoln; and especially her puppies, Isabelle and Cooper, and kitten, Mittens.

Tommy McDonald, 79, of St. Marys passed away Saturday, April 14, 2018, at Baptist Medical Center in Jacksonville, Fla.

Tommy was born July 17, 1938, in Glennville. He had resided in Camden County most all of his life and was a member of Crooked River Baptist Church. He had been employed with Gilman Paper Company for 10 years and Carolina Freight Company. Tommy enjoyed fishing and especially camping.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 18, at Allison Memorial Chapel in St. Marys with Pastor Donald Belcher Sr. officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Grove Cemetery in St. Marys. The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to service time.

Survivors include his loving wife, Laurie McDonald of St. Marys; four daughters, Jean Stanfield (Pete) of Kingsland, Shavonne Nobles (Wayne) of Jeffersonville, Kimberly Hill (Rich) of Duncansville, Pa., and Kelly Walton of St. Augustine, Fla.; son, Jeremy Luke McDonald (Megan) of Newport, N.C.; three sisters, Mable Carter, Betty Myrick and Ernestine Morgan; 18 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Dale Tyrone Way, 51, of St. Marys passed away Monday, April 16, 2018, at Southeast Georgia Health System, Glynn Campus.

Brother Dale Tyrone Way accepted Christ at an early age and was joined to the Young Zion Missionary Baptist Church and later to the Evergreen Missionary Baptist Church.

Dale was preceded in death by his grandparents, Thomas Jefferson and Louise Mack and Nathaniel and Lessie Lee Way, and two brothers, Darrell Way and Tony LaVon Mack.

He leaves to cherish his memories, his loving mother, Janice, and father, Thomas Mack Jr.; one sister, Wendy Schlefstein of Jacksonville, Fla.; one brother, Marlin D. Mack of Atlanta; four aunts, Corraine (Ollie) Marsh of Kingsland, Marvene (Harold) Coleman of South Carolina, Carrie Sykes and Irene Campbell of Kingsland; four uncles, Ervin (Shirley Ann) Way of Jacksonville, Fla., Nathan Way of Kingsland, Rev. Leon Mack of St. Marys and Nathaniel (Junetta) Mack of White Oak; a favorite cousin, Jennifer (Punkin) Way of Kingsland; a special mother, Elvie Washington; two special friends, Gerald Way and Eric (Rick) Washington; and a host of loving nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 21, at Young Zion Missionary Baptist Church. There will be no wake. Interment will be in Kinlaw Cemetery.

Mrs. Dorothy Juanita Walters Aldridge, 88, of Blackshear passed away Tuesday morning, April 17, 2018, at Southeast Georgia Health System, Brunswick Campus.

Born in Quincy, Fla., on Nov. 20, 1929, she had lived in Atlanta during her early years prior to moving to Camden County where she had lived for many years before moving to Pierce County where she had lived since 1989. Mrs. Aldridge had been a sales clerk for the Gentry’s department store for a number of years before becoming a full-time homemaker. She dearly loved her children and grandchildren and was a devoted mama to her girls. She had been very involved with her daughters’ activities growing up including Methodist Youth Fellowship and Girl Scouts where she had been a Girl Scout leader. 

She was a former member of Kingsland United Methodist Church and Mershon Methodist Church and was currently a member of First Baptist Church of Kingsland. She and her late husband, Charles Aldridge, helped start AA and Al Anon in Kingsland and she had been very active with the Al Anon program. After moving to Pierce County, Mrs. Aldridge volunteered her time at the Pierce County Nursing Home as a pink lady — a job she dearly enjoyed. Some of her hobbies included crocheting, reading and gardening. She was blessed with a green thumb and could make anything grow.

She was the daughter of the late Rev. Eddie and Thelma Richards Walters. She was also preceded in death by her stepmother, Josephine Mobley Walters, who helped raise her after the death of her mother; her husband, Charles Aldridge; a son-in-law, Owen Barnes; and all three of her brothers, Nolan Walters, Everette Walters and Lee Thomas Walters.

Survivors include her three daughters, Annette and Ed Roberson of Colesburg, Elaine and Jim Heath of Kingsland and Margie Barnes of Kempner, Texas; six grandchildren, Chad Roberson, Stafane (Brad) Deen, Tobie (Brian) Huckleby, James (Ashley) Heath, Keisha (Clayton) Tischler and Chris (Susan) Barnes; 12 great-grandchildren; a great-great-granddaughter; and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Funeral services for Mrs. Aldridge was held at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 21, at the Pearson-Dial Chapel. Interment was in the Mershon Cemetery. Visitation was held one hour prior to the service at the funeral home chapel.

Memorials may be made to the Harborview Pierce County Nursing Home Auxillary, 221 Carter Ave., Blackshear, GA 31516.

Rev. Robert (Bob) Allman died April 16, 2018, at the age of 98. He was original from Huntington, Ind.

He joins his wife who preceded him many years prior. He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II, then graduated from Columbia Presbyterian Seminary in Atlanta. He loved the South. He served churches in Salem, Jacksonville, Ala., Statesboro and St. Marys. After his full-time pastorate, he served churches in the Savannah Presbytery from Dublin to Jesup. He then retired. After his wife’s death he moved to live with his son (David) for 15 years.

He is survived by his three sons, Robert B. Allman Jr. (Betty Jo), David William Allman (Linda Sue) and Stephen Mellichamp Waters (Adam). He had five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

The memorial celebration will be at 4 p.m. May 20. In lieu of flowers, please send a contribution to the First Presbyterian Church of Peachtree City and mark it for the music scholarship program. His favorite hymn wasHow Great Thou Art.”

Joseph Leon Pinkney Sr., 47, went to be with our Lord Jesus on April 23, 2018, at UF Health in Jacksonville, Fla., after an extended illness.

Joe was born on June 22, 1970 in Miami to Johnnie C. Pinkney Sr. and Nora Butler Gibbs. Joe was baptized at an early age as a member of Oak Hill United Methodist Church in Tarboro and was proud to be a part of The Voices of Oak Hill choir. He was a graduate of Camden County High School class of 1989. Joe was an avid football fan, enjoyed spending time with his family and friends and attending Bible studies.

Joe worked at Gilman Paper Company until closure and then transitioned to Rayonier Advance Materials in 2003 and was known by his colleagues for his tireless energy.

In May 1996, Joe married the love of his life and longtime companion, Dana. To this union was born three children, Katlyn, Joseph Jr. and Lauryn.

He leaves to cherish his memory, his devoted wife, Dana Kay Pinkney of Kingsland; daughter Katlyn (Austin) Pinkney-York of Port Orchard, Wash., son, Joseph Pinkney Jr. and daughter, Lauryn Pinkney of Kingsland; one special grandson, Hendrix York of Port Orchard, Wash.; father, Johnnie C. Pinkney Sr of Miami; mother, Nora Butler Gibbs and stepfather Alonza Gibbs of Tarboro; brother, Johnnie C. Pinkney Jr. of St. Marys; sisters, Anna Baker of Woodbine, Karon (Keith) Ellis of St. Marys, and Loria Gibbs of Kingsland; mother-in-law, Deloris Attaway of Kingsland; sister-in-law, Vonda (Keith) Perry of Savannah; brothers-in-law, Dean Attaway Jr. and Bryan (Jenifer) Attaway of Kingsland and Cris (Melissa) Attaway of St. Marys. He also leaves a godmother, Stella Butler of Tarboro; a special cousin, Emanuel “Bubba D” Butler; and host of uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

He was preceded in death by his brothers, Bernard Pinkney and Tommy L. Pinkney. 

There will not be a visitation. A celebration of Joe’s life will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, April 30, at Wheeler Street Church of God, 900 Wheeler St. in St. Marys.
