Paulette Jenkins, 50, of St. Marys passed away on Thursday, Dec. 14, 2017, at Candler Hospital in Savannah.

Paulette was born on Aug. 15, 1967, in Dearborn (a suburb of Detroit, Mich.) to the loving parents of the late Cornelius Dixon and Elma Dixon. They resided in Highland Park, Mich. Paulette attended East Bethlehem Lutheran School, St. Benedict and Our Lady of Good Counsel. She graduated from Highland Park Community High School. She accepted Christ in her life and confirmed her faith as a teenager.

Paulette married her grade school sweetheart, Timothy Greathouse. From this union, Carl was born.  As a Navy family, they moved to Portsmouth, Va., and to St. Marys. Later, she married Charles Jenkins.  She became a second mom to Marquita, Jarvis and Jasmine. During this union, Margene was born.  

Paulette received many educational certificates. She held various jobs throughout her life that were related to providing assistance to others.

She leaves to cherish her memories, her husband, Charles Jenkins; her children, Carl (Crystal), Margene, Marquita, Jarvis, Jasmine, Matthew, Travis and Tracey (Eugene); mother, Elma Dixon; sister, Cormellon; 12 grandchildren, Tyana, Camyri, Malaki, Trey, Kordell, Harmonie, Gabriel, Che'Lynn, Carl Jr., Deasia, Demond and Rylee; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 23, at First African Baptist Church in St. Marys. The family will greet friends one hour prior to the service. Interment will be in Kingsland Cemetery.

Chilton Cisco, 75, passed away Monday, Dec. 18, in Jacksonville, Fla.

He was born Jan. 25, 1942, in Mingo County, W.Va., to the late Kearney Cisco and Ethel Mounts Cisco. He was preceded in death by his wife, Carol Ann Wellman Cisco.

He is survived by his son, Michael Cisco and his wife, Kim; a sister, Priscilla Haney; two brothers,  Kearney Cisco and Winfield Cisco; two granddaughters, Alexis Cisco and Tiffany Wilson; a great-granddaughter, Chasity Cisco; and a number of nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Memorialization will be by cremation. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 22, in the Shepard-Roberson Funeral Home Chapel.

William Alvin Brant, 72, of White Oak passed away Friday morning, Dec. 22, 2017, at his residence after an extended illness.

Born in Sylvania, his parents were William Leo Brant and Selma Godbee Brant. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Sheila Edna Williams Brant; his second wife, Kathy Elaine Head Brant; two sisters, Mildred Elizabeth Steed and Beatrice Roberta Williams; and a brother, David Franklin Brant.

William was a heavy equipment operator for the Camden County Board of Commissioners and was a collector and an avid NASCAR fan.

Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law, Tony Brant Elaina of Broxton; three daughters and a son-in-law, Terri Leanne McDonald (Brian) of Screven, Christine Cecilia Manbeck of Chiefland, Fla., and Traci Manbeck of Kingsland; 14 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; a sister, Carolyn Cannon; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Leo Brant (Diane) of Screven, Lannie Brant (Janice) of White Oak and Billy Brant (Lucille) of Woodbine; and also several nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service from noon to 1 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 27, at Frye Funeral Home.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 27, at the chapel of Frye Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery in St. Marys.

Pallbearers were Michael Padgett, Scott McDonald, Garrett Grant, Myron Kin, Robert Brant, James Brant and Russell Hatzke.

Arrangements are with Frye Funeral Home in Nahunta.

Emily Jean Rozier Herrin, 79, of Kingsland passed away Thursday morning, Dec. 21, 2017, at her residence after an extended illness.

Born in Hickox, her parents were Hubert W. Rozier and Tedia Bell Howell Rozier. She was also preceded in death by several sisters.

Emily was a member of Riverside Chapel Baptist Church and was the manager of Cumberland Village for 18 years. In her early years, she helped her parents with their motel and restaurant. She also worked at Crooked River State Park and was a Camden County school bus driver for six years. Emily loved fishing and gardening.

Survivors include her husband, E.B. Herrin of Kingsland; four children, Thomas Herrin (Regay) of Gainesville, Fla., Aundrea Diaz of Woodbine, Greg Herrin of Orlando, Fla., and Christopher Wentworth of Kingsland; eight grandchildren, Shannon Herrin, Megan Clifton, Lena Akes, Savannah Hill, Justin Johnson, Amanda Crosby, Crystal Wentworth and Emily Diaz; many great grandchildren; and also several nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Visitation was held for one hour prior to the service starting at 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 23, at Riverside Chapel Baptist Church.

A funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 23, at Riverside Chapel Baptist Church with Rev. Randy Wainright and Rev. Paul Roberson officiating. Burial followed in Smyrna Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Scott Henning, John Braswell, James Durden, Tye Crosby, James Galloway and Skeeter. Honorary pallbearers were Keith Brown, Kade Akes, Lucas Crosby, Garrett Herrin and Cody Herrin.

Arrangements were with Frye Funeral Home in Nahunta.

Joseph C. Hulbirt, 82, of St. Marys passed away Monday, Dec. 18, in the care of Hospice of the Golden Isles. He was born in Sayre, Pa., to Joseph and Madeline Hulbirt.

Following service in the Air Force, he began a career in retailing: Dey Brothers, Syracuse, N.Y.; Rothschild's, Ithaca, N.Y.; Knollenbergs, Richmond, Ind.; and The Globe Store, Scranton, Pa.

He retired from The Globe as vice president and general merchandise manager.

In retirement, he worked at the Scranton Country Club Golf Course and Osprey Cove Golf Course and was a volunteer at Cumberland Island National Seashore.

He is survived by his wife, Joyce; stepchildren, Debbie, Jim and Cindy and their spouses; two stepgrandchildren; and his sister, Marlowe Killam and her family.

Graveside services will be held in Scranton in the spring

Clifford Lee Mainor Sr., aka “Kippy,” of Woodbine passed away on Wednesday, Dec. 27, 2017m at 11:11 a.m. in the presence of his heartbroken family members at UF Health in Jacksonville, Fla. 

He is preceded in death by his parents; stepmother, Feodosher “Fruit” Mainor; daughter, Gail; siblings, Chris Jr., Wallace, James, Janie, Sandra, Jacob and Lilla.

He will be greatly missed and cherished by his wife of 57 years, Joanne V. Mainor; five children, Rita Mitchell of Snellville, Clifford (Lori) Mainor Jr. of Las Vegas, Nev., Lamar (Monique) Lawrence of Jasper, Ala., Crystal (Robert) Mainor-German and Robin (Kizziler) Mainor-Knight, both of Woodbine; 13 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; siblings, Ida Copeland of Folkston, Theodore (Gloria) Parrish of Atlanta, James (Nyanza) Parrish, Jerelene (Isaiah) Williams and Sylvester “Syl” Parrish, all of Savannah, and Leotis Parrish of Tarboro; father-in-law, Laurie Drummond Jr. of Woodbine; two very special friends, Willie Dunham, a barber for 59 years, and Bobby Lampkin, a fellow bondsman; one adopted daughter, Sally Rhoades; one adopted grandson, Eddie “Bear” Benton; five godchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

A memorial service was held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 2, at Evergreen Missionary Baptist Church.

Ms. Arthella May Larkin, 70, of York, S.C., passed away on Sunday, Jan. 7, 2018, at her home. 

Services will be announced at a later date.

Born in Indianapolis, Ms. Larkin was a daughter of James R. Padgett of Bradenton, Fla., and the late Priscilla Ann Short Padgett.  

In addition to her father, she is survived by her son, James R. Larkin of York, S.C.; her daughter, Marilee Lynn Carpenter (Tim) of Kingsland; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; her brother, Lee Padgett of Bradenton, Fla.; and her sister, Paula LaRowe of Mills River, N.C.

Our beloved mother Eunice Myers, 78, passed away on Jan. 1, 2018, in Atlanta after a short illness.

Eunice was born Sept. 19, 1939, in Fernandina Beach, Fla., to Mildred Taylor and Joseph Verdier. Eunice spent her childhood in Fernandina and St. Marys where she attended Ralph J. Bunche High School. Eunice married Raymond Myers (deceased) in 1956. From this union, four children were born: Joey, Victor (Dianna), Christopher (deceased) and Yvette (George).

She will be greatly missed by her children, 11 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. She also leaves behind her siblings, Katherine and Booker T.; and her uncle, Felix.

Mr. Charles Edward "Ed" Burgess, 80, of Ellijay died Friday, Jan. 5, 2018.

Mr. Burgess was born June 27, 1937, in Gilmer County, the son of the late Harvey and Myrtle Starks Burgess. He worked for the Gilmer County Board of Education as a bus driver 27 years and operated Absolutely County Restaurant for a number of years. Mr. Burgess was a member of the Agape Church in St. Marys. His parents and wife, Bobbie Burgess, preceded him in death.

Survivors include children and spouses, Hugh Burgess, Daniel and Gwen Burgess, all of Ellijay, and Andrea and Charles Shoemaker of Jasper; stepson and spouse, Andy and Alicia Macaulay; mother of the children, Louise Stewart of Jasper; sisters, Betty Jean Sanford of Ellijay, Kathie Banks of Ellijay and Johnnie Ann Gaskill of Thomaston; special niece, Diane Burgess; special nephew, Eddie Burgess; grandchildren, Derik Mullinax, Laranda Gienapp, Christopher Shoemaker, Christina Shoemaker, Courtney Esposito, Brook Burgess, Andrew Burgess, Melody Dannahoe, Brittney Burgess and Austin Burgess; 24 great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday from the chapel of the Bernhardt Funeral Home with Rev. Roger Burgess and Rev. Brondy Davis officiating. Interment followed in the Cartecay United Methodist Church cemetery.

The family met with friends from 1 until 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Flowers are accepted or donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association in memory of Mr. Burgess.

Kevin Charles Moore, 59, of St. Marys passed peacefully into eternal rest on Jan. 3, 2018, in his home.

Kevin was the son of the late John Pease Moore and Mary Loretta Dodds Moore.

Kevin was a recently retired GS15 for the Department of Defense and was always “dedicated to the fleet.” His work in civil service took him around the world. Kevin loved to live life to the fullest. He always made sure he was surrounded by his family and friends. Kevin was an avid boater, spending most of his time out on the water. He loved college football. His two favorite teams were the Clemson Tigers and the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame.

Kevin always loved to make people laugh and smile by telling jokes and stories in his very distinctive drawl. In fact, his stories, jokes, and drawl are how most people will remember him. Kevin always was looking out for others and would help in anyway he could. He was a great husband, father, brother and friend. Kevin made a lasting impression on everyone he met. He was truly a beautiful soul.

Kevin is survived by his wife, Emily, and their daughters, Amy Moore and Taylor Moore Wade and her husband, Zeke; his eight brothers, sisters and their spouses, Nancy and Steve Hesler, Patty and Danny Smith, John Moore, David and Pam Moore, Janet Moore, Marcia and David Saari, Jimmy and Mary Moore, Molly and Mark Lanning; and numerous beloved nieces and nephews.

Services will be held at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 9, at Allison Memorial Chapel. A celebration of Kevin’s life will follow the services with a reception at Stable Alley Bar-B-Q Co. in downtown St. Marys.

Betty Cross Murray, 85, of White Oak passed away Saturday, Jan. 6, 2018, at Hospice of the Golden Isles in Brunswick.

Born Jan. 9, 1932, in Laurel Hill, N.C., she was the daughter of the late Harvey E. and Mattie Lee Cross. She was also preceded in death by her son, Timothy Cross Murray, and twin great-granddaughters, Paisley and Macey Crews.

Mrs. Murray had been a resident of Camden County since 1960. She was the owner and operator of Little Bee Hive florist in Kingsland for 10 years and later taught preschool and kindergarten for many years. She touched so many of her students’ lives and loved everyone of them. She was a professional grandmother and will be missed and loved by her family. She was a member of the Kingsland First United Methodist Church.

Survivors include her husband, Bewick Murray Jr. of White Oak; daughter, Tami M. Crews (Mark) of White Oak; grandchildren, Brandon Crews, Ethan Crews (Dakota) and Miranda Crews.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 11, at Allison Memorial Chapel in St. Marys with Pastor Steve Curtis officiating. Burial to follow at Lawnwood Cemetery in Kingsland.

The family received friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 10, at Allison Memorial Chapel.

Pallbearers will be Mark Crews, Mark Schweitzer, Ethan Crews, Brandon Crews, Edward Bruce and Ben Cleghorn.

The family requests contributions in memory of Mrs. Betty Murray be made to Hospice of the Golden Isles, 1692 Glynco Parkway, Brunswick, GA 31525.

Donald W. Archer Sr., 92, passed away on Sunday, Jan. 7, 2018, in Kingsland.

He was born on April 9, 1925, in Groton, Conn. He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Anna Archer: his wife, Mary; brothers, John and Charles Archer; sister, Maude Kittridge; and son-in-law, Chester Brister.

Donald lived in Groton until 2010 when he moved to Kingsland. At the age of 17, he joined the U.S. Army and fought in World War II earning a Bronze Star. After the war, he met and married the love of his life, Mary A. Miller, on June 4, 1949. After their marriage, Donald was re-activated and sent to Korea in the Air Force where he earned the rank of master sergeant and earned a second Bronze Star.

At the age of 16, Donald worked on the first Gold Star Bridge, until they found out his real age. He played semi-pro football, helped design and build the first dune buggy, worked on the railroad and was a mechanic and automobile body repair. He retired from Pfizer in 1986 as a millwright after 33 years of service. He won several trophies for golf and horse shoes. He was an avid fisherman.

He belonged to several clubs, which he was very proud of: Pioneer Hose Co. No. 1, Groton, Conn.; Masonic Order, Blue Lodge, Mystic, Conn.; Shriners; Sphinx; One Dime, Norwich, Conn.; Old Bastards; Turtles; Tuckerbung; past commander of Groton VFW; also belonged to the VFW in Kingsland. He was one of the founding fathers of the Knucklehead Bait and Tackle shop in St. Marys.

He is survived by his six children, Deborah McDonald (Richard) of Greene, N.Y., Donald Archer Jr. (Janice) of The Villages, Fla., Cindy Brister of Kingsland, Joan Chambers of Groton, Conn., Sherry Archer of Fountain, Colo., and Mary Haeseler (Michael) of Mystic, Conn.; his adopted son, Warren Seabury of Groton, Conn.; grandchildren, Scott McDonald, Michael McDonald, David McDonald, Lori Archer, Craig Archer, Samantha James, April Palmon, Kelly DiFraia, Amanda Holland, Anthony Haeseler, Scot Haeseler and Alexander Haeseler; 15 great-grandchildren; his sisters-in-laws, Gloria Archer, Gloria Lutzi and Joan Heid; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews; and his best friend, Jim Dickey.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 10, at Allison Memorial Chapel in St. Marys with Pastor Greg Gardell officiating and with military honors. The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to services.

Alice Sue Depratter Crews, 75, of Woodbine passed away Sunday afternoon, Jan. 7, 2018, at her residence following an extended illness.

Born in Nahunta, her parents were the late Ray and Vera Lee Cleland Depratter. She is also preceded by a daughter, Laurie Anne Wham, and a brother, Harry Depratter.

Alice retired from UGA as a home economist. She loved Georgia Bulldogs, gardening, cooking and attended First Baptist Church of Woodbine where she was a treasurer and clerk for about 30 years and taught Sunday school at the church.

Survivors include her husband, Robert Crews of Woodbine; a brother and sister-in-law, Alton and Arlene Depratter of Brunswick; a son-in-law, Jim Wham of Cocoa, Fla.; and several nieces, nephews, other relatives and a host of friends.

Memorial services by the family will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 12, at First Baptist Church of Woodbine with Dr. Clay Turner and Rev. Tim Rice officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to service at the church.

In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be to the First Baptist Church of Woodbine Building Fund, a project very close to her heart, at 300 W. Eighth St., Woodbine, GA. 31569.

Eugene Walker, 73, of the Greenville community in Kingsland passed away on Saturday, Jan. 6, 2018, at UF Health in Jacksonville, Fla.

Eugene Walker Sr. stepped into time on March 31, 1944, to the late Luther Walker Sr. and Daisy Bell Anderson Walker.  

Eugene gave his life to Christ at an early age under the leadership of Rev. Robert Dawson. He served faithfully at Zion Sisters Missionary Baptist Church as a member of the male chorus and Sunday school superintendent.

In 1962, Eugene graduated from Ralph J. Bunche High School in Woodbine. He was very active in football as a trainer and also in track. After graduating from high school, he was employed at Gilman Hospital and later Gilman Paper Company. He was a member of the Royal Workers’ Masonic Lodge No. 144.

In 1967, Eugene married Eunice Roundtree and to this union four children were born, Gene Walker, Erika Davis, Towanna Miller and Timothy Walker. On May 10, 2003, Eugene and Betty Grant joined in holy matrimony. Besides his parents, Eunice and Betty, one brother, Calvin Walker, preceded him in death. 

He leaves to cherish his memories, his children; brothers, Herman (Ira) Walker of Jacksonville, Fla., Luther (Doretha) Walker Jr. of Kingsland, Ammie Lee (Iris) Johnson of Kingsland and Rev. Roosevelt (Phyllis) Rhone of St. Marys; sisters, Willie Mae Washington of Woodbine, Barbara (Joe) Davis, Lara Walker and Luverta Baker, all of Kingsland and Jeri Drummond of West Palm Beach, Fla.; a very special, devoted and caring niece, Sean’dee Blake; loving aunts, Peggy Reed and Sara Walker; one loving uncle, L.B. Walker of California; extended family members, Lawrence Anders, Harry Anders and Kenneth (Jodi) Anders; loving in-laws, Leon (Janessa) Grant and Carlis Grant; very special friends, Vera (Buddy) Payne, Robert Walker, Willie Dunham, Jim Banks, Bishop Arthur Dawson Jr. and Rev. Bernard Thompson; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

On Dec. 27, 2017, Glen Edward "Eddie" Mahan completed his cycle on Earth in the loving care of Hospice of the Golden Isles.

Eddie was born April 5, 1937, to Woodson Julian Mahan and Mildred Edwards Mahan in Indianapolis. He graduated from Ben Davis High School in Indianapolis and attended Perdue University. In 1966, he married Gloria Jean Gill and became the much-loved stepfather of Gail Annette Gill Swiggum and Carey Eugene Gill.

He was the ever-so-special father-in-law of Susan Mott Gill (Carey); the grandaddy of Johanna Swiggum Rogers, Kirsten Swiggum, Jonathan Gill and Sara Gill Young (Danny); great-grandaddy of Aidan Barber, Reagan Rogers, Kallisti Muse and Blake and Bailey Grace Young.

He is also survived by his sister, Mary Helen Mahan Jackson (Robert) of Anderson, Ind.; nephews, Troy and Robert Scott Jackson, and Scott's twin sister, Tamara Jackson Nicolosi (Michael); and numerous grandnieces and nephews.

For many years, Eddie was very well-known and respected throughout the paper industry. He and Jean saw a lot of the world in their travels and made many dear friends along the way. Eddie always had a smile that won many a heart.

Go rest high upon that mountain, Eddie.
