Surrounded by her loving family, Linda L. Moore died peacefully in her sleep on Nov. 22, 2017, Thanksgiving eve. She was at home under hospice care and free from pain. Linda had fought a brave fight against cancer.

Linda was born Aug. 19, 1940, in Lawrenceburg, Tenn., the daughter of Mamie L. Burns and Charles M. Hall. She was reared in Gainesville, Ga., where she graduated from Gainesville High School in 1958. Linda subsequently attended Mount Vernon Junior College in Washington, D.C., and Massey Business School in Atlanta.

Linda married 2nd Lt. M. Neal Moore, U.S. Army, of Albany on July 2, 1960. During the next 18 years, Linda traveled extensively as an Army wife, raised two children, and made many lifelong friends. Her most cherished moments were those of wife, mother, grandmother and friend. Linda touched many lives. She never met a stranger. Linda loved people and people loved her.

Linda enjoyed traveling with Neal, especially on cruises. Her favorite was a Disney cruise with their then 3-year-old granddaughter, Crosby. Hard to tell who enjoyed the Disney experience the most, Linda’s eyes sparkled. Their travels in the states found them visiting old friends and recounting fond memories. The north Georgia mountains always beckoned Linda, as did Atlanta and Cumming, where she was never far from her beloved grandchildren.

Linda always gave freely of herself to help those in need. Early on she was a gray lady, helping amputees returning from Vietnam at the Eisenhower General Hospital, Fort Gordon.  Later she served 10 years as the volunteer coordinator with the American Red Cross in Shelbyville, Tenn. And, most recently, she dedicated herself to the Methodist Home in St Marys where she served on the auxiliary board of directors for six years. She loved the boys. Of note, Linda was instrumental in starting the annual Methodist Home Golf Classic, which the board of directors recently named in her honor. Linda especially enjoyed chairing the silent auction component of the golf tournament, which was generously supported by both golfers and attendees.

Survivors include her husband of 57 years, Neal Moore; daughter, Liz McDermott of Atlanta; grandsons, Taylor and Ford McDermott of Atlanta; daughter-in-law, Brooke Moore and granddaughter, Crosby, of Cumming. Linda was preceded in death by her son, Steve.

She is also survived by her cousins, Joan Wappes of St Marys; Kay Lee of Roswell; and Evelyn Willoughby of Columbia, Tenn.

A celebration of her life memorial service will be held Jan. 20 at the King of Peace Episcopal Church in Kingsland with Father Al Crompton officiating. Friends and family will be received between 9 and 9:45 a.m. Services will begin at 10 a.m. A reception and continued celebration of Linda’s life will be held at Osprey Cove immediately following church services.  Her ashes will be scattered at sea at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Camden County humane society in Kingsland, the Methodist Home in St Marys, Hospice of Golden Isles in Brunswick or King of Peace Episcopal Church in Kingsland.

Janet Bertram Desmond, 88, passed away unexpected and peacefully on Dec. 1, 2017, in Henderson, Nev.

Janet was born July 29, 1929, in New York City, N.Y. She is survived by her husband, Patrick A. Desmond of Henderson, Nev.; son, Robert A. Gonano III of John’s Island, S.C.; stepsons, Patrick C. Desmond of Viera, Fla., and Michael D. Desmond of St. Marys. Other survivors include sister and brothers-in-law, Margaret and Eddie Gonano of Keedysville, Md.; granddaughters, Renee M. Gonano of Greenville, N.C., Caity M. Gonano of Pittsburgh, Pa., Julie Daily of Viera, Fla., Jamie Thurston of Hudson, N.H., and Andrew M. Desmond of Everette, Wash.; and a great-granddaughter, Kylie McDuffie of Greenville, N.C.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Otto and Janet Bertram of New York City; first husband, Lt. Robert A. Gonano Jr., United States Air Force of Pittsburgh; brother-in-law, Sgt. Donald H. Gonano, United States Army of Pittsburgh; and grandson, Patrick W. Desmond of Viera, Fla.

Janet, known affectionately as Bert by many of her friends, cherished family and friends above all else. Other passions included Maryland crab cakes, watching golf, wine tasting and the game of bridge. Among the many wonderful traits admired by her friends was the fact she raised a family and lived a long life without ever learning to cook.

Janet attended Greenbrier College for Women in Lewisburg, W.Va., obtaining a degree in business administration. Shortly thereafter, she met and later married Robert A. Gonano Jr., a United States Naval Academy graduate. Following Robert’s death in an aviation accident, she was employed by Vitro Laboratory of Silver Springs, Md., in the personnel department. While there, she particularly enjoyed meeting and helping all those she encountered, making many lifelong friends.

Feeling the need for a change, Janet and son Robert relocated to Oxnard, Calif., in early 1970s where she worked in the administrative end of the vegetable processing industry. Janet met and later married Patrick A. Desmond in May 1980. They remained in Oxnard until Pat’s retirement in 1986, at which time they moved to Bullhead City, Ariz.

Janet’s time in Bullhead City was shared with her love of travel. From the Amazon jungle to Alaska’s highest peak, Janet and Pat saw and enjoyed the world. While many would naturally shy away from driving a 36-foot RV, not Janet. She logged many miles in the USA, Mexico and Canada behind the wheel of their RV. After many years traveling and finding Bullhead City a bit tame, in 2000 they moved to McDonald Ranch in Henderson where they loved looking down on the Las Vegas lights each evening.

Janet was active in many McDonald Ranch activities, but ultimately fell head over heels for the game of duplicate bridge. She loved the game and the many wonderful friends she found along the way in learning to play.

If so desired, memorial contributions may be made in Janet’s name to The Fisher Center for Alzheimer’s Research Foundation, 110 East 42nd St., 16th Floor, New York, NY 10017.

Janet will rest in peace in two beloved locations, in the Severn River alongside the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md., where she married Robert A. Gonano Jr. many years ago and together with her husband Patrick, at the Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Boulder City, Nev., upon his passing.

Arrangements entrusted to the Boulder City Family Mortuary of Boulder City, Nev.
