Carolyn McCarthy Bolt passed away peacefully at her home in Tuscaloosa, Ala., on June 2, 2018, at the age of 96. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Sullivan Bolt; her son, Lucius Flannagan Bolt; and eight McCarthy siblings.

An inurnment service will be held at the gravesite at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 11, in Homeward Cemetery in Waverly.

Carolyn was the seventh of nine siblings born to Clyde Laurence and Esther Quarterman McCarthy of White Oak. She earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1942 at the University of Georgia. She later attended post-graduate studies at the University of Alabama.

During World War II, Carolyn worked as draftswoman in the Brunswick shipyards and prepared instruction manuals for J.A. Jones Construction Co. Following her marriage to Joe in 1942, she continued her work as draftswoman/technical artist at the University of North Carolina, the College of Commerce at the University of Alabama and at Anderson Nichols Corporation in Boston.

In Tuscaloosa, Carolyn was well-known as a philanthropist and dedicated volunteer, especially at the Friends of the University of Alabama Arboretum, which she helped found.

Among her friends and family, she will be remembered as a creative original for her sense of style, her love of plants and her famous rapier wit. She leaves behind a daughter-in-law, many nieces and nephews and a number of great friends and caregivers. We will miss her.

Contributions may be made in her name to: Friends of the Arboretum, College of Arts and Sciences, Box 870268, Tuscaloosa, AL 35487.
