Karen Charlotte Turrentine Haas, 67, passed away Friday, Dec. 23, 2016.

Karen was a founding member of St. Stephens Anglican Catholic Church in Athens. She was a beloved member of the medical community for over 30 years. She delivered thousands of babies as a partner with Athens Women’s Clinic and ultimately retired in Camden County after serving the military community in Kings Bay. She loved her career and was passionate about women’s health.

Karen fought a courageous battle with kidney failure and was on dialysis a few months shy of 19 years. Karen loved her only daughter, Erica, and her grandchildren, her niece and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her father, B.B. Turrentine; her mother, Ann Mathilda Savage Turrentine; and her sister, Ann Susan Turrentine Surrency.

Karen is survived by her daughter, Erica Ann Haas Gillespie (John); grandchildren, Patrick Gillespie, Nathan Gillespie, Matthew Gillespie and Katrina Gillespie; her nephews, Brian Surrency and Tyler Surrency (Rachel); and niece, Leslie Surrency Cheek (Justin).

The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to all the caregivers at Thrive Assisted Living in Watkinsville, Amedisys Home Health, Christopher’s Bridge and Homestead Hospice for all the very compassionate, loving care she received.

A service for family and friends will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 28, at St. Stephens Anglican Church in Athens. A reception will follow shortly after.
