Holmes

Delbert E. Holmes, 87, of Kingsland passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, March 6, 2019, at his residence.

Mr. Holmes was born Jan. 25, 1932, in Centrailia, Ohio, and was the son of the late William and Julia Allensworth Holmes. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Raymond Dale Holmes, and sister, Maxine Millikan.

Mr. Holmes had resided in Bartlesville, Okla., from 1952 to 2007, before coming to Camden County. He had been employed with Phillips Petroleum Company, retiring with 40 years of service. He was a veteran of the United States Army.

Survivors include his loving wife of 66 years, Marjorie King Holmes; daughter and son-in-law, Brenda and Ken Barbery; grandson, Shane Barbery; and great-grandson, Dalton Barbery.

Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 9, at Oak Grove Cemetery in St. Marys with Pastor James Roberson officiating.

Robert T. Martin of Kingsland departed this earth to his eternal home on Thursday evening, March 7, 2019, surrounded by close friends.

Robert “Bob” Thomas Martin Jr. was born Nov. 1, 1955, in Fort Meade, Md., to the late Robert Thomas Martin Sr. and the late Grace Davis Martin.

We lost the shine and shine he did. He touched so many people in so many ways. Bob loved a good time, a party, spending time with friends, listening to music, cooking on the grill, pitching horseshoes and playing cards and Scrabble. He wore many hats throughout his working life with his later jobs being in mobile home service and installation, City of Kingsland water department and water well drilling.

Besides his parents, his sister, Deborah Beavens, preceded him in death.

He leaves to cherish his memories, his soulmate, Patricia “Pat” Glass; brothers, Lawrence “Larry” Martin of Denison, Texas, and Scott Martin of Fairfax Station, Va.; sisters, Paige Martin of Denver and Tracy Crispino of Littleton, Colo.; and a host of other relatives and devoted friends.

A memorial celebration of Bob’s life will be held at 2 p.m., Sunday, March 17, at Sunset Funeral Home Chapel, 401 N. Lee St. in Kingsland.

In lieu of flowers, do a good deed, be kind, pay it forward or donate a living plant.

Mrs. Wanda Jean Riddle Carter, 77, of St. Marys died in Brunswick in the early morning hours of Friday, March 15, 2019.

Calling hours for Mrs. Carter were from 2 to 2:50 p.m. Sunday, March 17, at Lighthouse Church of God in St. Marys. Funeral services followed there at 3 p.m. Interment and committal prayer followed at Shiloh Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery in Blackshear.

Hubert Daniel Harper, 79, of Brunswick passed away when the Lord called him unexpectedly early Monday morning, March 18, 2019, at St. Vincent Medical Center in Jacksonville, Fla., following an extended illness.

Born in Jesup, his parents were Lafayette S. Harper and Ola Drawdy Harper. He was also preceded in death by his son, Hugh Darrell Harper; two brothers, Stevie Harper and James Harper; and Spice, the Australian shepherd.

Mr. Harper retired after working many years as a production supervisor for Georgia Pacific. He was a member of Emanuel United Methodist Church and has served as a lay leader in the church and enjoyed woodworking, reading the Bible, gardening and working in timber. He enjoyed fishing and had been working on digging a big pond with a fountain that he planned to stock with fish he could catch and cook and enjoy. He and his wife Carolyn enjoyed riding through the timberland to look at the wild animals. He had a big heart and enjoy sharing his veggie farm with friends and strangers alike.

Survivors include his wife, Carolyn Harper of Brunswick; his daughter, Sandra Kay Rush of Lawrenceville; his son and daughter-in-law, Tommy Vickers (Sheila) of Hoboken; eight grandchildren and their spouses, Jason Rush (Michelle), Stephen Rush, Brian Rush (Melissa), Erica Schmidt (Tim), Shae Anderson (John), Jessica Lopez, Erin Lee (Josh) and Anna Leigh Vickers; several great-grandchildren; two brothers and sisters-in-law, David Harper (Luan) of Brunswick and Wade Harper (Sherry) of Kingsland; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Nina Landon (Gene), Doris Johnson (Gary) and Donna Parks (Woody), all of Brunswick; and his 3-year-old Australian shepherd, Spi-etté, who says a blessing before dinner. Also several nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 24, at Emanuel United Methodist Church in Brunswick with Rev. Carl Barnhardt, Rev. Eddie Morrison and Brother Randy Watson officiating. Visitation will be held an hour prior to the service, from 2 to 3 p.m., at the church.

Burial with Masonic rites will follow in Lawnwood Cemetery in Kingsland.

Pallbearers will be Jason Rush, Stephen Rush, Brian Rush, Shawn Landon, Ash Harper, David Harper Jr., Ethan Harper and Gene Davis.

Honorary pallbearers will be the men’s Sunday school class and lay leaders of Emanuel United Methodist Church and the Golden Oldies senior singing group.

Kelsey Marie Martin, 36, of Kingsland passed away Friday, March 15, 2019.

Kelsey was born Nov. 10, 1982 in Nampa, Idaho. She had been a resident of Camden County since 2007. Kelsey was a graduate of North Hall High School in Gainesville and attended North Georgia College in Oakwood. She was a personal fitness trainer, certification through AFAA. Kelsey was an animal lover, a fitness nut, enjoyed music, the beach and always loved dancing with her children.

Memorial services were held at 6 p.m. Tuesday, March 19, at Allison Memorial Chapel in St. Marys with Stuart Sullivan officiating.

Survivors include her children, Noah Christopher Martin and Charlie Marie Martin of Kingsland; father of her children, Chris Martin of Kingsland; parents, Christine and Kevin Foster of Woodbine; brothers, Joshua Kane Harker (Jennifer) of Gainesville, Steven Grant Foster (Jessica) of St. Marys and Aaron Michael Foster (Lauren) of Clarksville, Tenn.; and several nieces and nephews.

The family requests memorial contributions be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

John Ashley Parker, 92, of Alma passed away at his residence on Tuesday, March 19, 2019, after a short illness.

He was born on Sept. 26, 1926, in Bacon County to the late John Burrell Parker and Fannie Lee Bratcher Parker. His wife, Velma Louise Bargeron Parker; two great-grandchildren, Dakota Moore and Molly Erin Darity; two brothers, Alvin and William T. Parker; and a sister, Louise Bennett, preceded him in death. 

Mr. Parker worked at the Jacksonville, Fla., shipyard for many years, then worked with Gilman Paper in St. Marys where he retired in 1988. He was a member of the Wesley Chapel Church.

Survivors include four children, James Don Parker of Morgan, Jason Don Parker (Tina) of St. Marys, Patricia Joan “Jo AN” (Sam) of Alma and Peggy Richerdean Teele (Gene) of St. Augustine, Fla.; 15 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and 10 great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 24, at Wesley Chapel Church with Rev. Joseph Lee and Rev. Jeff Williams officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends between 6 and 9 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Active pallbearers will be Austin Moore, Lariat Moore, James Raines, Ben Stancil, Randy Stencil and Wayne Parker. All others in attendance will be considered honorary escorts.

Virginia Merle Wilkinson Kightlinger, 75, of Folkston passed away Saturday, March 23, 2019, at her residence with family by her side. Being strong willed to fight her pulmonary disease over the years, it finally overcame her.

She was born in Houston County, Ala., to Green Berry “G.B.” and Inez Fears Wilkinson. Growing up in the cotton fields and peanut patches of south Alabama and Florida, one of her memories with her three sisters and a brother, was feeding chickens through the cracks in the floor, gave her a strong determination to do what she set her mind to through the years. She was employed for a number of years as a security guard at Kings Bay Naval Submarine Base.

Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Sara Raulerson; her brother, Henry Thomas Wilkinson; her mother- and father-in-law; brothers-in-law, Herbert Kightlinger and Elgie P. Kightlinger; and a stepdaughter, Christine Marie Banks.

She is survived by her loving husband of 27 years, Donald Kightlinger; her sons, Justin Kightlinger, Julio “Buddy” Gusman, Michael Gusman and Jimmy Gusman; stepson, Donald Kightlinger Jr.; brother-in-law, Ronald Kightlinger; daughter-in-law, Debra Kightlinger; two sisters, Arnette Wilson and Sandra Fletcher; sister-in-law, Linda Wilkinson; and several grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and special friends.

The family will receive friends from 1 to 3 p.m. Friday, March 29, at Shepard-Roberson Funeral Home. A graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. March 29 in Homeland Cemetery.

She loved family and friends and life itself. Special thanks to the staff of Heartland Hospice that made her last days comfortable.

Bobby L. Harrell, 61, of Woodbine passed away on Monday, March 18, 2019, at Memorial Health in Jacksonville, Fla., following a short battle with cancer.

Bobby was born in Waycross and had lived most of his life in Camden County. He was the son of the late Robert and Linnie Mae Higgs Harrell.

Bobby was a veteran of the United States Navy, retiring as chief with 18 years of service. He also retired from the Department of Defense in maintenance at the Kings Bay Naval Submarine Base with 14 years of service. He enjoyed playing racketball and fishing.

He is survived by his wife of 14 years, Sonia L. Harrell of Woodbine; son, Brooks Harrell of Blackshear; brother, Larry Harrell of Waycross; grandchild, Brayden Harrell; and stepson, Christian Munoz of Alaska.

Bobby will be deeply missed by his friends, neighbors, and former co-workers at the Navy base.

A celebration of Bobby’s life will be held from 4 to 5:30 pm. Friday, March 29, at Allison Memorial Chapel in St. Marys

ADKINS — Charlie James Adkins, 68, passed away at UF Health Shands in Gainesville Fla., on Sunday night, March 24, 2019, from multiple health complications.

Charles was born June 25, 1950, in Cincinnati, Ohio, and became a native and lifelong resident of Camden County. He arrived here without any known biological family, but Charles was very charming and loving and adopted his own family. 

He was active in his community attending social activities and training at Gateway Behavioral Health and Coastal Home Care for many years. Charles was able to maintain many jobs with his fun and energetic personality. Charles worked at the local Walmart, McDonalds, and made a host of friends in the community through these work sources. 

He also volunteered at JR’s Barbershop and Weiner King where he adopted the Rollins Family. He also loved to follow the Camden County Wildcats football team games and attended Restoration Church on a regular basis with his adopted family Owen and Goodin. Charles rarely met a stranger. He was a very loving man. He was a huge Dallas Cowboys fan along with WWF Wrestling.

Charles also leaves to mourn a devoted caregiver, friend, case manager, Ametria Everett, and a host of friends and family. Services will be held at 11 .m. Friday, March 29, at Restoration Church.

Sauquan Lamont Albertie, 41, a Camden County native and resident of Indianapolis, Ind., passed away unexpectedly on Friday, March 29, 2019. 

He was born on Sept. 1, 1977, to Samuel Albertie Sr. and Sheila Glover Smith in Fernandina Beach, Fla. "Quan,” as he was affectionately known to his family and close friends, graduated in the Class of 1996 from Camden County High School, where he participated in his favorite sport of football. His favorite teams were the Miami Hurricanes and the Jacksonville Jaguars. 

He grew up in and was a member of Evergreen Missionary Baptist Church. Quan was employed as a commercial truck driver most of his life until his health would no longer allow him to perform his duties in logistics.

Quan was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Hernan and Rose Albertie, and his maternal grandparents, Raleigh and Willie Mae Glover. 

He leaves to cherish his memories: his companion of 10 years , Rita Ewing,  Indianapolis, Ind.; two daughters, Saucoya Thomas, Brunswick, and Suivana Albertie, Indianapolis.; one grandchild, Ti'mia Thomas, Brunswick; his parents, Sheila (Earl) Smith, Folkston, and Samuel Albertie Sr., Yulee, Fla.; his sister, Somiko Woods, St. Marys; two stepsisters, Demetria Moses, Jacksonville, Fla., and Latoya Bolden, Folkston; his brothers, Samuel Albertie Jr., Jacksonville, and Santreus (Heidi) Albertie, Orlando, Fla.; a stepbrother, Jeremy Smith, Folkston; his stepgrandfather, Wilbur Smith, Kingsland; his aunts, Jeanette Adams, Dorothy, Magaline and Ann Albertie, all of Yulee,  Rena Lois Albertie, Jacksonville, Violet (Kenneth) McRoy, Knoxville, Tenn., Gloria (Earnest) Wesley, Folkston, Carolyn LaFayne (Don) Brockington, Lakeland, Ga., and Betty Ann (Donnie) Humphries, Hilliard, Fla.; his uncles, Herman (Janice), Clinton and Greg Albertie, all of Yulee, and Terry (Marie) Jacobs, Yulee, Donald (Willette) Glover, Woodbine, Dennis (Cassandra) Smith, Jacksonville, and William (Patricia) Smith, Folkston; a close friend, Bilal Siler, Knoxville, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

A visitation will be held 5-7 p.m. on Friday, April 5, 2019 at Refreshing Oasis Church, 1495 S. 5th Avenue, Kingsland.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 6, at Refreshing Oasis Church. Interment will follow at Kinlaw Cemetery.

Ms. Mary Rosa Lee Johnson-Nelson, of Kingsland passed away on Tuesday, March 26, 2019, at Baptist Medical in Jacksonville, Fla., surrounded by her family.

Ms. Nelson was born on May 15, 1925 in Sanderson, Fla.. to the late Ernest and Leafie Mann Bryant.         Rosa Lee Nelson, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother, went to her rest after 93 well lived years on this Earth. She loved puppies and babies and big pots of stew. She could eat more crab legs than three grown men and had more shoes than a Belk’s. She was the heart and soul of a giant extended family and the life of the party at any gathering. We will always miss her thoughtful cards, Facebook participation, hilarious voicemails and unusual Christmas gifts. She was a strong, adaptable woman who kept up with the times, loved the Lord and has left a lasting legacy in her children and their families.

Ms. Nelson is survived by her daughter, Janice Campbell of Kingsland; her sons, Dan (Michelle) Johnson of Mooresville, N.C., Donald (Lynn) Johnson of Kennebuckport, Maine., and Cliff (Kathy) Johnson of Galveston, Texas.; her grandchildren, Scott (Martha) Johnson, Bryan (Barbara) Johnson, Tracey (Karl) Johnson, Angela Dycus, Jaimee Garcia, Justin (Sadie Nazworth) Campbell, Jana Johnson, Lena (Bryan) TenBroek, Kara (Jeff) Pardue, Sandi (Doug) Anania, and Jacob Johnson; her 18 great-grandchildren; her three great great-grandchildren; her sister, Katie Parsons of Jacksonville, Fla.; and her brothers, Leroy Bryant and Franklin Bryant, all of Sanderson, Fla.

Besides her parents, Ms. Nelson joins her first husband, Clifford Cecil Johnson, her husband, Roy Clarence Nelson, her son, Wayne Johnson, and grandson, Joey Campbell in Heaven. 

A visitation for Ms. Nelson was from 3-4 p.m. Saturday, March 30, 2019, at Coastal Camden Funeral Home. Funeral services were at 4 p.m. in the Woods-Wainwright Chapel of the funeral home. Interment at Lawnwood Cemetery in Kingsland will immediately follow. Pallbearers will be Ms. Nelson’s sons, Dan, Donald, and Cliff, and her grandsons, Bryan and Scott.

Mother Luverta Johnson Baker, fondly known as “Bert,” passed away on Friday afternoon, March 29, 2019.  

She was born to the late Lee and Lula Mae Johnson on Feb. 12, 1927. She was educated in the public schools of Camden County and was reared in a Christian home. She became a member of the First African Missionary Baptist Church, Kingsland, at an early age, was baptized and served faithfully in the choir. 

One daughter was born to Luverta, Hazel Marie Williams. She later met and married her late husband, Joseph Baker in 1952, and moved to Fernandina Beach, Fla.

She was employed for many years at The Sandbar, a privately owned and renowned seafood restaurant on the infamous Fernandina Beach. She was very proud of her employment there because she had the opportunity to see so many people, some of celebrity status. She retired from The Sandbar and began working part-time in food service at the elementary schools. She loved children and enjoyed working around them.

After she retired from The Sandbar, she reconnected with the First Missionary Baptist Church, Fernandina Beach, under the leadership of Reverend Robert Flagler, and served faithfully in the senior choir and later served on the usher board. However, as her health began to fail, she moved to Kingsland to be closer to her younger brother and his family, and was restored to membership at the First African Missionary Baptist Church, under the leadership of Pastor K. C. Davis, and was later consecrated as one of the mothers of the church.

Preceding Mother Baker in death were her parents, Lee and Lula Mae Johnson; her husband, Joseph Baker; a brother, Edwin Dawson; and her only child, Hazel Marie Williams. Mother Baker leaves to cherish her memories: a sister, Jerriel L. Drummond, West Palm Beach, Fla.; her brother and caregivers, the family of Ammie Johnson, Jr., (Yvonne); her niece, Gina Hall (Tracy); and her nephews, Troy (Joanna), Ashton and Josh, Kingsland.

Luverta will be truly missed by her surrogate daughter, Lexie Chatman; goddaughters, Serena Joseph and Bria Luverta Blue; godsister, Lettie McClain; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and sorrowing friends.

A home-going celebration will be held on Saturday, April 6, 2019, 12 p.m., at First African Missionary Baptist Church, Reverend K. C. Davis, pastor. There will be no wake. Viewing will be held at the Church on Saturday, from 9 a.m. until the hour of service.

Celebration of life service for Dr. Leslie Sterling Bland, 72, who transitioned March 25, 2019, will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, April 5, at Church of Christ-Lake Forest, 950 W. Edgewood Ave.

A native of Jacksonville, Fla., he attended the local public schools of Duval County, graduating from Stanton Senior High School, class of 1964. Furthering his education, he attended Bethune-Cookman College, Edward Waters College and the funeral services program, Miami-Dade Junior College (1972) where he completed his studies and successfully passed the national board examination.

Years later, Dr. Bland attended the Southern Christian University where he received his B.S. (1994), M.S. (1996), M.Div. (2001) and the D. Min. (2004) degrees. Dr. Bland served as the evangelist of the Church of Christ-Kingsland.

He was predeceased by his father and mother, the late Leon Bland Sr. and Norma Hull Bland.

Survivors include his wife, Shirley Bland; son, Leslie Bland Jr.; daughters, Demetria (Robert) Dean and Yolanda (Kevin) Bennett; grandsons, Kevin II and Kaden Bennett; brothers, Leon (Patricia) Bland Jr. and Niles (Johnitta) Bland; and other relatives and friends.

Dr. Bland will lie in state from 3 to 8 p.m. Thursday, April 4, at the Church of Christ-Kingsland, 711 N. Lee St. and from 9 am until the hour of service Friday, April 5,  at Church of Christ – Lake Forest, Jacksonville, Fla. Entombment at Edgewood Cemetery.

Curtis "Curt" Alan Daniels, 68, of Crawfordville, Fla., died at home on March 28, 2019, surrounded by his family and friends. 

Curt was a native of Jacksonville, where he grew up. He moved to the Crawfordville area in the 1970s where he was a counselor at Inner Harbor Rehabilitation in Franklin County. After his counseling career, Curt owned and operated Wakulla Carpet Brokers and worked for many builders and families in the Big Bend area. 

Curt was an avid golfer and for many years he was the golf champion at Wildwood Country Club in Crawfordville. Curt loved to fish, loved his family and cherished the time spent with his grandchildren. 

Survivors include his wife of 30 years, Wanda Crum Daniels; children, Jeremy Daniels and wife, Colleen, and Miranda Whaley and husband, Robert; brother, Robert E. Daniels Jr. and wife, Cindy; five grandchildren, Noah, Wyatt, Ethan, Ava and Alli; many nieces and nephews; and his four-legged friend, Gracie.

Funeral service will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday, March 30, at the Sopchoppy Southern Baptist Church and the family will receive friends one hour prior to service beginning at 3 p.m.

Mr. Aldreth Elvoye “Al” Funderburk, 92, of Blackshear passed away Friday afternoon, March 29, 2019, at his residence.

Born in LaFayette, Fla., on June 10, 1926, he had lived in Waldo, Fla., for several years prior to moving to Pierce County in 2005. Mr. Funderburk was a World War II Army veteran having served in the European theater and went on to retire from Gilman Paper Company after 36 years of faithful service.  

During the first 18 years of his retirement he and his wife, Margie, were members of Campers on Mission. Mr. Funderburk had been a charter member of Westside Baptist Church in St. Marys, where he also served as a deacon, Sunday school teacher and licensed lay minister from 1955 to 1988.  From 1989 to 2005, he was a member of Waldo Baptist Church in Waldo, Fla. where he served as a deacon and Sunday school teacher.  From 2006 to the present Mr. Funderburk was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church. He was an avid fisherman of men and fish.

He was a son of the late Thomas Fletcher and Beatrice Morgan Funderburk. He was also preceded in death by four brothers, Hayward, Adrian, J.T. and Weyman Funderburk.

Survivors include his wife of 73 years, Margie Johnson Funderburk of Blackshear; a daughter and son-in-law, Gail and Buford Hancock of Blackshear; four sons and daughters-in-law, Bruce and Sarah Funderburk of Dawson, Steve and Nancy Funderburk of Blackshear, Jeff and Debbie Funderburk of Davenport, Fla., and Terry and Sheila Funderburk of Sylvester; a sister, Toma Jean (Larry) Daley of Blackshear; a brother, Joseph Leaun (Sheryl) Funderburk of Kingsland; a sister-in-law, Mary Edna Funderburk of Mayo, Fla.; 15 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Funeral services for Mr. Funderburk will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 31, at Emmanuel Baptist Church. Interment will be in the Waters Cemetery.

Visitation for Mr. Funderburk will be held at the church one hour prior to the service.

The family kindly requests members of the Ron Spell’s Sunday school class to serve as honorary pallbearers. Please meet at the church by 2:30 p.m. Sunday.

Barbara A. Zukoff, 58, of St. Marys passed away Saturday, March 23, 2019, at the Southeast Georgia Health System, Camden Campus.

Born March 7, 1961, in Norfolk, Va., she was the daughter of the late Carol Hunter and James L. Craighead Sr. She was also preceded in death by her husband, John Zukoff, and sister, Mamie Brower.

Mrs. Zukoff had been a resident of St. Marys since 1991, and married the love of her life, the late John Zukoff, in 1985. She was a proud Navy wife and mother, devoting her life to her family. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother.

Survivors include her children, Helen Morris (James) of South Korea, and Anthony Zukoff of Holcomb, Kan.; siblings, John Craighead, Jamie Spivey and James Craighead Jr.; grandchildren, Tyler Morris and Helayna Morris; and several nieces and nephews.

Private services will be held by the family at a later date.

Robert Justin Wainright, 27, passed away Monday, April 1, 2019.

Justin was born June 11, 1991 in Jacksonville, Fla., and was a lifelong resident of Camden County. He was a 2009 graduate of Camden County High, and was on the wrestling team. He enjoyed fishing and music.

Survivors include his parents, Robyn Jowers Wainright of St. Marys, and Lamar Wainright (Donna) of Tallahassee, Fla.; son, Robert Jackson Wainright of Illinois; twin sister, Jessica Foster (Steven) of St. Marys; and two brothers, Marc Wainright (Shannon) of Kingsland and Chris Wainright of Camden County.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 6, at Allison Memorial Chapel in St. Marys with Chaplain Kenneth Long officiating.

Mrs. Patel was born in Panatha, India, on Oct. 2, 1933. She was the daughter of the late Hirabhai and Gangaben Patel.
