Bertha (Bertie) Turner, 95, of Kingsland, formerly of Penn, Pa., died at home on Monday, Nov. 5, 2018.

She was born April 2, 1923, in Penn Township, Pa. She was the daughter of the late Joseph A. Bach and Marie (Schultz) Bach.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John Turner; and four sisters, Margaret Barras (Robert), Grace Fulmer (Herbert), Aleen Keffer (Willis) and Dorothea Furlong (Orrin).

She is survived by her daughters, Karen Campbell and husband, Thomas, with whom she resided, and Donna Lavelle (Edgar); three grandchildren, William Lavelle (Carla), John Lavelle (Barbara) and Megan Hundt (Jeffrey); four great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 1, at Our Lady Star of the Sea in St. Marys. Donations can be made to Hospice of the Golden Isles.

James Michael Hannaford, 65, of Folkston passed away Nov. 19, 2018, in Brunswick following a brief illness.

He was born June 11, 1953 in Jacksonville, Fla. He was a graduate of Charlton County High School and Mercer University. He received dual master’s degrees from the University of Kentucky. Mr. Hannaford had been employed as a professor of English and German for the past 25 years at the College of Coastal Georgia.

He is survived by his wife of 26 years, Barbara P. Hannaford; his parents, J.O. and Jackie Hannaford; three loving stepchildren, Maggie Tucker, Michael (Jamie) Tucker and Ashley (Michael) Hughes; a sister, Jeanne (Don) Crews; and six grandchildren, Jordan Rowe, Cain Drury, Lilly Tucker, Grayson Tucker, Graham Hughes and Nolan Hughes.

A celebration of life service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 21, at the First Baptist Church of Folkston with William Garlen officiating. Memorialization will be by cremation.

Donations may be made in Michael’s honor to the James M. Hannaford Memorial Scholarship at College of Coastal Georgia or the Southeast Georgia Health System Nunnally House.

June Carolyn Mizell, 76, of St. Marys passed away on Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2018, at Southeast Georgia Health System, Camden Center.

June was born on Nov. 24, 1941, to the late Maria Ann Mizell and the late Howard Myers. She attended Ralph J. Bunche High School. She enjoyed playing softball in her youth as well as sewing. She was employed at Thiokol Chemical Corporation. She was a member of Wheeler Street Church of God and served as an usher until her health declined.

June had a loveable, welcoming personality and was well loved by all who knew her.

June enjoyed reading, listening to gospel music and doing puzzles. She absolutely loved spending time with her grandchildren who lovingly referred to her as “Ganna.”

June was preceded in death by her son, Marshel L. Mizell (Mary); her son-in-law, Brad E. Foreman; her grandson, Jaden C. M. Mitchell; and her brothers, Stanley Lane, Jerry Mizell and Archie Myers (El Lounya).

Loved ones that will be cherishing June’s memories include her children, Michael D. Mizell, Avis M. Foreman (Carlos), Andrea M. Mizell (Andre) and Geron L. Scarlett (Ashley); brothers, Douglas M. Lane (the late Adrianne), Bishop Kenneth L. Hill (Janice), Gary Myers (Loretta), Dorrie Myers (Sandra) and John Myers (Joyce Ann); sisters, Eva Jefferson (Ben) and Jean Payne; 16 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; a special godbrother, Alexander Davis; a devoted cousin and friend, Judy Livingston; devoted friends, Louise Carter, Dorothy Whitaker, Ella Wilson, Ruby Sibley and Carolyn Attaway; a special brother, Charles Floyd; a special cousin, Sheryl Jones; a special extended family, the Telegas; and a host of loving nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 24, at Wheeler Street Church of God. A visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 23, at the funeral home. Interment will be in Oak Grove Cemetery.

Johnsen

LeRoy E. Johnsen, 87, passed away peacefully Monday, Nov. 12, 2018, surrounded by his loving family.

Born in 1931 in Minneapolis, he was the son of the late Edith and Erling Johnsen and one of five sons. He joined the United States Navy and served in the Korean War while stationed in Hawaii. Later he settled in Woodbine and worked at Gilman Paper Company until he retired in 1996.

Roy was survived by his two children, Lenward “Buck” Johnsen and Catherine Porter; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; brothers, Dennis Johnsen and David Johnsen; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth “Liz” Johnsen; parents, Edith and Erling Johnsen; and brothers, Jim Johnsen and Dick Johnsen.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 15, at Colesburg Cemetery.

Edwin (Ed) John Pollock was born on April 2, 1952, in Cohoes, N.Y., to Ed and Rose Pollock. He departed this earth at his home on Nov. 13, 2018, after a long illness.

Ed grew up in North Branford, Conn., attended school there and joined the Air Force after graduating high school. After two enlistments, Ed left the Air Force to attend VSU, graduating in 1985.

Ed and his family moved to St. Marys in 1987 so that Ed could start a job with Lockheed. He worked for Lockheed for 30 years only to retire this past April.

He is survived by his devoted wife, Svea and their family: daughter, Rebecca DeVane, her husband Thomas and their children Savannah and Travis; and son, Damian Blalock, his wife Amy and their boys Cam and Web. He is also survived by his brothers, Michael (Joan), John Pollock (Michelle) and Richard Pollock (Robin); a host of nieces and nephews; and, of course, all of his dear friends. We will all miss him.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Clyde Allison “Al” Chapman Jr., 77, of Brunswick and St. Marys passed away Tuesday, Nov. 13, 2018, at UF Health in Jacksonville, Fla.

Al was born June 30, 1941, in Brunswick. He was a 1960 graduate of Glynn Academy High School and a graduate of John A. Gupton School of Mortuary Science in Nashville, Tenn. He was the owner and operator of Chapman Funeral Chapel in Brunswick, established in 1970, Allison Memorial Chapel in St. Marys, established in 1999, and Allison Monument Company. He was a veteran of the United States Army, serving during Vietnam, with the graves registration unit, that he was so proud of.

Al had his hands in everything, buying, selling, always trying to make a living for his family. He was definitely the “Man” who was the one if a family ever needed help with anything, he was the one to call on. When the hurricane hit St. Marys in 2017, upon arriving back home with no power, he immediately hit the streets with his backhoe and tractor to help families of the community who needed help. He was always there for anyone who needed him in more ways than one.

Al had served as magistrate judge in Glynn County for one year and was coroner of Glynn County for 16 years. He was a member and past president of the Brunswick Jaycees, member and two-term Exalted Ruler of the Brunswick Elks Lodge No. 691, Southeast District Deputy Grand Exalted Ruler to the Georgia Elks Association, member of the American Legion Post 166, Alee Shrine, Brunswick Shrine Club, Masonic Lodge F & AM, Glynn County Supper Club, Wednesday Night Supper Club, the exclusive Raccoons of Bennie's Red Barn and the SNL group of St. Marys. He was a member of the Woodbine Opry, and enjoyed his nights of bluegrass and barbecue at Confederate Station.

Survivors include his loving wife of 51 years, Mary Sloan Chapman; children, Allyson Chapman, Sloan Chapman Tindall (Timmy) and Al Chapman III (Chrissy); his grandchildren whom he adored, Hannah Tindall, Logan Tindall, Timothy Tindall and Landon Chapman; brother, Jo B. Chapman (Sharon); sister, Jenny Claire Swick; sisters-in-law, Catherine Sloan Bailey and Dusty Sloan; a niece, Meredith Horne (Rodney); two nephews, Brad Chapman (Audrey) and Jevon Nelson; two great-nieces; and several cousins.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 17, at Chapman Funeral Chapel in Brunswick. Visitation was held Friday at the funeral home from 3 to 6 p.m. A private interment with military honors was held at Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

Former St. Marys city councilman Gerald C Roberts passed away peacefully on Nov. 17, 2018, at Hospice of Golden Isles in Brunswick at the age of 74.

He was a member of Greater United Methodist Church in St, Marys and a graduate of Ralph J Bunche High School, class of 1962.

Mr. Roberts was a man of great integrity. He was selected as one of the 10 most influential men in Camden County and served on countless boards and authorities, including the Development Authority of St. Marys.

On Dec. 8, 2016, the City of St. Marys planted a tree on Osborne Street in honor of  Mr. Roberts for giving more than 40 years of community service. Mr. Roberts served on the St. Marys City Council for 14 years as the mayor pro tem and council member. He was called by many the “Community Neighbor.” He indeed was    a lover of mankind.

Along with his parents Tommie and Rebecca Roberts, he was preceded in death by three siblings, Virgil Roberts, Leo Roberts and Altermese Roberts Washington.

He is survived by his loving wife, Betty H Roberts, of 53 years; two daughters, Janie (Rev. Jaunce) Wilson and Nivea (Antonio) Gonzelalez; three grandchildren, Xavier, Jacob, and Victoria; and a host of  family and friends.

A celebration of life is scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 1, at the First African Baptist Church in St. Marys, 812 Wheeler St. There will not be a viewing, however, the body will lie in repose two hours prior to the service.

Frank Patrick "Butch" Kennedy Jr., 77, of St. Marys passed away Nov. 18, 2018, at Southeast Georgia Health System in Brunswick.

Butch was born Oct. 21, 1941, in Westerly, R.I., to Frank Patrick Kennedy Sr. and Elizabeth Ann Rondeau Kennedy. He was a veteran of the United States Army, serving during the Korean conflict as a paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne.

Butch was retired from Electric Boat Inc. of Groton, Conn., after 37 years as a nuclear inspector on submarines. Butch loved to golf, was a huge Indianapolis Colts and Boston Red Sox fan, enjoyed country music, including Conway Twitty, and was big fan of old cowboy movies on TV. He was of the Catholic faith and had been a resident of St. Marys since 1999.

Butch is survived by his wife, Robin L. Kennedy of St. Marys; children, Crystal G. Kennedy Allen (William), Sean M. Kennedy and Kimberly A. Kennedy, all of Rhode Island, Kristian L. Kennedy and Frank P. Kennedy III (Deborah), all of St. Marys; a sister, Sarah Elizabeth Tucker (Ralph) of Rhode Island; several grandchildren; great grandchildren; and other family.

A service to celebrate Butch's life, will be held at a later date.

Randy W. Saturday passed away early Tuesday morning, Nov. 27, 2018, one day before his 59th birthday, Nov. 28, 1959.

Randy was a lifelong resident of Kingsland and was an electrician and AC tech by trade. He was an avid fan of NASCAR and college and NFL football. His biggest thrill was for him and Tina to take off a few times a year with family to go to the Georgia and Tennessee mountains.

He was preceded in death by his father, Frank Saturday.

Randy is survived by his wife, Tina; daughter, Jessica Pike (Eddie); grandchildren, Colton and Knox; his mother, Betty Saturday; brothers, Danny Saturday (Olivia) and Billy Saturday (Kimberly); sister, Kim Cook (Jeff); aunt, Bobbie Tucker (Dwayne); cousin, Greg Tucker (Dianne); several nieces and nephews; and his beloved dog, Buddy. 

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 30, at Harbor Worship Center, 140 Colerain Road in Kingsland.

The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 1, at Harbor Worship Center with Pastor Mike Sanes officiating.

A graveside service will follow at 3:30 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 1, in Metter at Lake Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of the Golden Isles, 1692 Glynco Parkway, Brunswick, GA 31525, in his name.

Pallbearers will be Danny Saturday, Billy Saturday, Danny Saturday Jr., Greg Tucker, Scott Dekle and Andy Casey.

Jacqueline (Jackie) Cecile Denis-Fish, 75, passed away peacefully at her home in St. Marys with her loving husband by her side on Tuesday, Nov. 20, 2018. 

She was born on Feb. 5, 1943m in Norwich, Conn., to the late Merilda and Alfred Denis. She graduated from Griswold High School. She married her soul mate, Terrence Fish, on July 21, 1962, in Jewett City, Conn.

She went on to work as a very successful administrative assistant at Backus Hospital for 15 years and at the United States federal civil service for 10 years.

She was lovingly nicknamed “Grandma” by everyone who knew her and adored by all. She loved to knit and sew beautiful pieces and spend quality time with her friends and family — especially going to yard sales with her granddaughter, Charlene! Jackie loved spending time with her beautiful dog, Auggie, and cat, Mike.

Jackie is preceded in death by her parents, Merilda and Alfred Denis; and siblings, Lucy Denis, Doris Sadowski and Tom Denis. 

Jackie will be lovingly remembered by her husband of 56 years, Terrence Fish; daughters Candy Fish, Kim (William) Trantalis, Stacey (Rick) Mendez and Michelle Fish; brother, George Denis; sister, Yvette (Bill) Gordon; grandchildren, Danielle (Dan) Mikulak, Jennifer Trantalis, Ashlynn (Zack) Highsmith, Charlene Storey and Anthony Storey; and great-grandchildren, Ayden Highsmith, Kaleb Highsmith and Olivia Mikulak.

A celebration of life will be held in Jewett City, Conn., in 2019.

James Ruben Lewis, 58, of Kingsland died Sunday afternoon, Nov. 25, 2018, at the Hospice of the Golden Isles House in Brunswick after an extended illness.

Mr. Lewis was born to the late Johnnie Baxter Lewis and Mary Elizabeth Moody Lewis in Jacksonville, Fla. He was a master plumber and could fix just about anything. He enjoyed being on a boat fishing and loved the Jacksonville Jaguars.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by a brother, Johnny Lewis.

Mr. Lewis is survived by three sisters, Debbie Nichols (Glenn) of Yulee, Fla., Randa Roberts (Rickey) of Jacksonville and Beverly Whitman of Yulee; eight nieces and nephews, Amanda Nichols (Dawn), Melissa Nichols, Jessie Roberts, Megan Roberts, Shayne McCance (Marisa), Andrew McCance, Brandon Whitman and Lawton Harris III; a special family friend, Mike Crowder of Jacksonville; and numerous great-nieces, -nephews and other relatives.

A graveside service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 30, at Greenlawn Cemetery in Waycross. The family will be receiving friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Friday at Miles-Odum Funeral Home.

Jerry Jeanne Merrow, 88, a longtime resident of Camden County, passed peacefully in Oroville, Calif.

Jerry Jeanne was preceded in death by her husband, Claude Kenneth Merrow II; and her son, James “Little Jimmy” Travis.

Jerry Jeanne is survived by her children, Susie Suzanne, Claude Kenneth III, Alecia Claire, William Edward, Charles Prescott, Jeffery Alberta, Donald Wayne and Kathryn Lynn; 22 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

A woman of faith, Jerry Jeanne Merrow was a member of the Church of the Great God.

Linda Lee Hernandez, born Sept. 12, 1942, passed away Nov. 30, 2018, after a long battle with Parkinson's.

She was raised in St. Marys and attended Camden County schools. She was an avid reader and enjoyed handcrafts. She was a longtime employee of Walmart, retiring in 2015.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Douglas Hernandez.

She is survived by her children, Angel Brown of Brunswick, Phil Gowen of Woodbine and Andy Gowen of Brunswick; grandchildren, Amanda (Andy), Leeanne (Angel) and Nicolette (Angel); and great-grandchildren, Trysten (Amanda) and Sailor (Leeanne).

A celebration of life ceremony will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 16, at Cumberland Inn & Suites, 2710 Osborne Road in St. Marys.

Eva Mae Pendleton, 92, of St. Marys passed into eternal life on Monday, Dec. 3, 2018, at Senior Care Center in St. Marys.

She was born April 10, 1926, in Charleston, S.C., and was the daughter of the late Harley J. Turner and the late Effie E. Murrell Turner.

In her younger life, she worked as an administrative secretary at the Charleston Naval Shipyard while married to Herman B. Bostick, who passed away in service to our country. She married her life mate, Hugh Pendleton on Dec. 10, 1960, and lovingly dedicated her life to her husband, children,

family and all of the “little people” she tended throughout the years who knew and loved her as “Miss Mae.” Her light will continue to burn bright in all of the hearts that came to know her.

The family wishes to extend their sincere gratitude to the Hospice of the Golden Isles, the Senior Care Center of St. Marys, and to everyone who helped her feel comfortable and loved.

Along with her parents, Mrs. Pendleton was preceded in death by her brother, James Turner; and a son, John C. Bostick.

She is survived by her loving husband of 58 years, Hugh C. Pendleton; son, Robert H. Pendleton (Tamara) of Fernandina Beach, Fla.; two daughters, Patricia T. Hval of Connecticutt and Linda G. Barlow of Rhode Island; sister, Betty Kennedy of South Carolina; brother, Harry Turner of Indiana; several grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews; and special friends, Paul McClellan and Thora Blount of St. Marys.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 8, at Allison Memorial Chapel in St. Marys with Pastor Edward Dixon officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to

service time. A private burial will be held at Jacksonville National Cemetery.

Mrs. Arlene Reynolds Gibson, 76, of Cumming died Sunday, Dec. 2, 2018 at Seasons Hospice and Palliative Care in Cumming.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 6, at Southerland Funeral Chapel, with Rev. Dean Ropp officiating, with interment in Woodlawn Cemetery.

Arlene was born Jan. 17, 1942, in Dodge County to the late Mary Burnham Reynolds and Joe Brown Reynolds and was a lifelong resident of Georgia, except for three years in Kentucky. She was a graduate of Dodge County High School, Georgia Southwestern University, Valdosta State University and was a member of North Lanier Baptist Church in Cumming.

She was a former employee of First National Bank for one year, the Bank of Eastman for more than 10 years and was a retired educator for Kingsland Elementary School for more than 33 years.

Arlene was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister and aunt. She had a passion for teaching, especially reading, working with toddlers in church and faithfully studying God’s word. She enjoyed time with her grandchildren, ministering to nursing home residents, cooking, sewing, helping others, working in her yard, reading, gardening and crossword puzzles.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Wilton L. “Bill” Gibson.

Survivors include son, Dr. Bradford W. Gibson and wife, Stephanie of Cumming; two grandchildren, Christopher Gibson and Kennedy Gibson; two sisters, Susie Harrell of Eastman and Joyce Hutchinson of Clayton; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends in Southerland Funeral Chapel from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 6.

Joseph Kenneth Ryals, 81, of Folkston passed away Dec. 5, 2018, at his residence with his loving wife and family by his side.

He was born April 13, 1937, in Nahunta. Kenneth was a member of Winokur Baptist Church. He was employed by Gilman Paper Company until his retirement.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Betty Ryals; father, Jim Ryals; mother, Georgia Ann Murray; a brother, James Moody Ryals; and a sister, Odessa Louise Rodgers.  

He is survived by his wife of 13 years, Carolyn Ryals; children, Tammie (Michael) Turner, Tonya (Michael) Morgan and Teresa (David) Batten; stepchildren, Cindy (Terry) Price, Lisa Ross and Tricia Hauser; a brother, Alton Ryals; 15 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

A celebration of life service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 9, at Shepard-Roberson Funeral Home Chapel of Folkston with Rev. Charlie Dunn officiating. Memorialization will be by cremation.

Stewart Montgomery MacLean was born Oct. 10, 1938, in Melbourne, Australia. After a brave struggle with cancer, he was taken from us in a blessed state on Nov. 25, 2018, with his family by his side. 

He leaves behind his two sons, Hamish Edward MacLean of Jacksonville, Florida and Alisdair Charles MacLean of Sugar Land, Texas; Hamish’s wife Sherry; Alisdair’s wife, Michelle and their son Nicholas and daughter Bridget; his sister in-law, Maria Eugenia Blazquez Bascuas de Martin, her son Jorge Manuel (and family) both residing in Spain; and also cousins and extended family members and many fine friends in England, Spain, Australia and throughout North and South America.

Stewart was preceded in death by his wife, Charo; his mother, Mary Elizabeth Montgomery MacLean; his father, James Angus MacLean; his brother, Hamish, who died at infancy; and other family members.

Stewart graduated from high school at Gleelong School in Australia and received his degree from London University. He worked as an international sales executive throughout the world for more than 50 years. 

Stewart became a United States citizen and participated in a citizenship ceremony in Beaumont, Texas, in 1996.

Stewart was passionately devoted to his family, friends and faith. He played an active role with each Catholic church where he was a parishioner. Among many favorite pastimes, he was an avid fisherman and an excellent gardener. Earlier in life, he was an accomplished rugby player, rower and rally race car driver.

A Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 15, at Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church in St. Marys  with Father Mariusz Fuks presiding.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the building fund of the Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church in St. Marys and/or the Community Hospice & Palliative Care, 4266 Sunbeam Road, Jacksonville, FL 32257, also online at support.communityhospice.com.

Many people have been with us in person or spirit during these difficult days. We thank them very sincerely for their support, cards, calls and visits. Special appreciation is expressed to our Pastor, Rev. Mariusz; Deacon Joe and family; Father Gergel; Tim and Rhonda Hughes; Pam King; Bobby and Vila Paulk; Lisa Johnson; and Community Hospice of Fernandina, their staff, nurses and CNAs. These with many others provided attention, gave us courage and comfort and we will be forever indebted to them.

Finally we want to thank all those in attendance at his funeral Mass. We wish you well in God’s care.
